Does anyone happen to know if new Defender prices are likely to be discounted by much?

you see what happens? You start looking for a cheap runaround for about £3,000 and as they appear hard to find you are drawn to the dealers for a new one! A very dangerous affair. I would send them a picture of myself and say, "if you see this man, dont let him have a test drive!.

Yes, but not a lot.

Obviously it depends on the model and the dealers' incentive structure. I understand their front end margins are quite narrow, but they can boost their bonus payments from LR based on volumes, and a menu of other services.

Just exploring options tbh. My plan was to get a (relatively) cheap Defender but still something half-decent but now there may be another car beng changed in the family and it was mentioned that a "decent" 4x4 could be shared.

I'm not sure how practical a Defender is as a bit of a "shopping car" in driving terms, but it seems a Freelander would be accepted because it looks acceptable in the female "what would the neighbours think" stakes, so I'm wondering if a more modern Defender may be acceptable, if that makes any sense.

New defenders will definately pass the test. Freelanders are a great driving/looking car, but a Defender is more for the discerning individual.

Just bought a Volvo XC90 with £9k off list. Having had a new Disco 3 with a worse reliability record than the 1979 ex-mod 109' we had, I'd recommend either buying an older LR which you can expect to 'tinker' with or buying something from a different marque.

My 52 reg, 60k mile, Defender 90 has never broken down or needed any parts apart from wiper blades and some tyres. It's been driven off road regularly (including deep wading) it's been to the Norwegian arctic and to Le Mans and has towed race cars big distances. If you look after a Defender it will look after you. Don't listen to the hearsay.
(Discos, P38 and Freelander I on the other hand ...)

My Wifes Disco £ has been 100% reliable over the last 3.5 years. A number of friends own LR products and none have had major issues.

If its a SW then loads ...
But if you buy a pickup, hardtop, twin cab or Commercial SW (no rear side windows) you pay lgv tax.
March 1 2001 onwards £185 a year.
If its a new Defender then it's Euro 4 and so only £125.
That's one of the reasons I have a hardtop defender.

It is £405 - but only for a station wagon. Do you need windows in the back that much?
If you do you could always buy commercial and convert ..
