Hi All
I would like to put in a new stereo but I believe the built in amps and ISO wiring harness can be a bit tricky,
Has anyone done this who could give me some tips or am I better off ripping it all out and starting again
Cheers

What year P38? There are 2 variants that I know of - the early one is relatvely easy and requires you to make some simple attenuators for the 4 speaker channels out of the head unit, the other is more difficult and I haven't solved it yet.

The wheel controls are straight forward to convert and it looks like you can buy parts to do that for either version.

Should be the earlier version then. I think the change occured at a similar time to the change from GEMS to Bosch engine management.

This link should help you.

Just an update for anyone who's interested!

After being quoted £800 to fit a new system through out from a local Audio specialist, I took it to Halford as they said they had a lead that did all the wiring conversion and stuff that would convert the system to an after market stereo.
I explained about the pitfalls he may encounter with the door amps but he seemed confident.
Anyway 2 hours later a rather red face youth said that he couldn't make it work and didn't have a solution.
To cut a short story long I got it home, armed with an old crappy stereo I decided to remove one of the amps and cut all of the wires going into it,I then taped off the purple, black and a grey and black wires which left just the speaker wires,I then wired all the pos together then all the neg and "bingo" music, so did the same to all of the doors.
Cost! £1 for a bag of crimp connectors.
All I have left to do today is to buy an 8 way iso connector and wire up the speakers in the Dash area, which will leave the orange wires to the Amp and subwoofer in the boot, which I'm not bothered about. Then check the power connector and make sure it is all the right way round and jobs a goodun.
Total cost around £20.
HTH anyone in the same boat

Cheers

Well done. Been reading this with interest. I am useless at stereos beyond pulling them out and plugging them in. I might have to PM you at some point in the future!!
