Hi all

I bought myself my first Land Rover at the weekend, if you want to see it, click here

Anyway, I'm smitten with it, and it has only one flaw at the moment. When I start the car from cold, everything feels great. The gears all change smoothly. However, as the car warms up, the gears get progressively harder to select, to the point where they become positively "stiff". Also, when warm there is a defined "clunk" upon each gear change, I can hear it clunking into gear.

So, why so nice and smooth when cold then so tight when warm? It's totally opposite behaviour to any other car I've owned.

My first thought is to change the gear oil, and it's also been recommended to try changing this. Can anyone tell me if I should use special oil for the box and point me towards a guide to change both of these components! I'm OK with the spanners, but not the best. smile

It may be worth changing the gearbox oil. Check the spec in a Haynes manual but it should be ATF power steering fluid. It may have been filled 'by accident' with EP80 but this normally gets thinner as it gets warm. Very strange. It's also worth changing engine oil, front and rear dif oil, transfer box oil, timing belt etc as a precaution if you don't know the history.
