Yup, all of the 1.8s have the problem. They claimed they fixed it but the problem still carries on occuring.

But is still extremely rare and not a big deal if it does happen.

did they not to do any mods to the later engine then? surely doing the headgasket has to be an expensive job? is there a way of limiting the chances by regular coolant checks?

I've had 3 1.8 freelanders over a number of years and never had any prblems with any of them to date.

The potential for a headgasket issue is completely over exaggerated by all and sundry. The later cars had mods to the headgasket itself, to the locating dowels and to the thermostat layout all simply to knock the 'pub talk' on the, er, head.

Simple preventative measures include not thrashing the car from cold and doing weekly level checks.

If you were unlucky enough to experience a headgasket failure (unlikely) then budget for around £350 to have it sorted at a reputable garage or £100 for the bits DIY.

Thats the second time i've heard £350 this week. My volvo 940 head gasket is likely to cost £600 in a garage. Do you not need new bolts and a head skim with the K series??
