I've been watching the prices of Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Autos and they seem to be staying pretty high.

Since our current Freelander 1 only does 5-6k miles a year I wonder if, when we come to replace with a Freelander 2, a 3.2 I6 might make more sense.

Obviously, it'll be a nicer drive than a TD4 and use much more fuel but I reckon the reduced purchase price will more than offset my additional fuel costs.

Anyone driven the I6 and care to share views? I'm kind of thinking that this might be a 'junior Range Rover' (which I really want) but more appropriate size wise for my wife to knock around in during the week.

Yes, I think it suits the car nicely - but as you're aware, most are put off by the relatively high fuel consumption. It's nice and smooth, much quieter than the diesel and offers decent performance, albeit I seem to recall it sounds a little strained towards max rpm (perhaps just because it gets noisier). If you can find one cheaply compared with a diesel then I'd certainly go for it. They're also all auto which suits the car far better than the manual, in my opinion.
