Maybe Buying this Range Rover 4.6 HSE...Advise?
Discussion
Ok, my older brother that lives in France wants a range rover, he has being looking about and has come up with this one - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&am...
It has LPG which he want and has cruise which he also wants, I no NOTHING about these cars at all, what should I look at? What are the common faults?
He is just going to send me the money and i go and buy it but i want to make sure to the best of my limited knowledge that I don’t buy a dog so any help/advise would be very helpful so at least it will get him back to Mimizan in France without going pop
Thanks
Nick

Main thing that jumps out at me about that one is that it's had a full respray at some point. Things are colour coded that don't get colour coded from the factory (mud flaps, grille, sills etc). I would be wondering their motivation, such as any accident damage.

Lots of stuff about these on
http://www.rangerovers.net/newrremedies.htm
Porous block (or is it slipped liner?) is the biggie that will absolutely ruin you.
O rings are a cheap part to replace, but lots of expensive labour to get to them (Partial dashboard removal)
Basically, read through the above link, and keep your eyes wide open.
On the eBay link, that is an older model, and has the GEMS technology rather than BOSCH (The BOSCH management came in in 2000, and is regarded as a better buy)
Someone on another thread described the P38 Rangie as a fabulous car that had the ability to perform open wallet surgery on you in the blink of an eye.
I've just had mine serviced, and it failed MOT on corroded brake pipes. As the car is a keeper, I've had the brake lines done properly rather than bodged, but along with the service and the MOT, I have just been relieved of £900.
BlueThunder is one who can speak from experience about the faults on these cars (I've been ok so far, touch wood) as I think he had every problem going!

Also the eBay link has a lack of photos of the drivers cabin..... wonder if there is a tell-tail stain on the carpet in the footwell?
ETA - Ignore this - not all the photos loaded on my PC! I see there are interior shots now!

Sounds like you've decided to buy it already.
We have decided that a Range Rover is the one to go for, mainly because of there ability to tow 3500kg unlike things like L200's and Hilux's only managing up to about 2750kg. Maybe we won’t specifically buy this one but this is the one that has caught his eye, if we get there and its a dog i have zero problem with getting in my car and driving home with the cash still in my pocket.

I did. Every problem you could suffer with a P38 i had in 9 years of ownership. Great vehicles when they were running right and free from problems. For ride quality you will have to go far to beat it. But there would never be the temptation to own another one again.http://www.rangerovers.net/newrremedies.htm

Took the trip to Coventry today to look at the above car and it was not as good as I hoped and was told by the seller
It had recently passed a mot but had several advisories that i was not sure about: Oil leak, corroded brake lines, pitted disks and 2 tires low.
Plus the paint on the car was not great, it had being repainted in a few places and almost looked a different colour in others, car was warm when i got there and took probably 10 seconds of turning over to start, on the plus side everything on the car seemed to work.
Going to give the seller of this one a call in the morning - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&am...
I like the colour of it better than the gold, brother has almost said if I’m happy with it to buy it!

P38s do tend to leak oil - mine usually had it coming from somewhere and it cost me a fortune sorting out the various drips .

The car you have provided a link to has been messed about with plenty. Wrong wheels (and the seller doesn't know the difference), wrong lights, different engine etc. Is it even an Autobiography or has it just had the interior trim and a new badge on the back?
The same seller has a 4.0 for a little more money. It looks more original, is 4 years newer and looks less like it it trying to be something it is not. Oh and it has sat nav.
Whatever you do, take someone with you who knows what he's looking at or get a PPI. It sounds like you have got money burning a hole in your pocket, which is not a good thing when you are looking at old Range Rovers. They are lovely cars but they were always best when they were under the original manufacturer's warranty. Since then they have always been costing some poor bugger a lot of money to keep working and when you are looking at A 170K mile 4.6 at £3995 you could easily find you are spending more than the price of the car to get the car right, and in a very short period of time.
Good luck.
