06 model range rover or range rover sport
Discussion
hi
looking at these at the moment, range rover 06 model or range rover sport. has anyone owned both?
what are the main differences? ,both seem to be at the same price at the minute ,also is there a great difference between the diesel and petrol mpg.
any info would be a great help thanks.

I think only you can answer the question. The RR is a more expensive model and more luxury aimed. The Sport is what is says, more road biased sharper drive.
You need to drive both and see which you prefer, then compare spec and price.
Personally I don't mind the look of the RRS but think the regualr RR just looks flabby and middle aged and is far uglier than the original or p38a variants. On this basis alone I personally wouldn't even look at a regualr RR. But if the looks don't bother you, then see above and drive both.
As for fuel, which engines are you looking at? Earlier RR's used BMW V8's and straight 6 diesels latter ones don't.
The TDV6 is a good engine and should see mid 20's average, less if you push it and higher if you don't. I know of a few people with TDV6's, both claim 27mpg ave is quite easy and over 30mpg on a run if driven sensible.
V8 will be more like 14-16mpg. Probably 20 or just over on a sensible run and down towards 12 if you push on or drive it hard for short distances.

2 totally different cars. Firstly be aware that the RRS is in fact a discovery. It is built on the Disco 3 platform. I loved the look of the RRS but didn't understand it as a vehicle. A sport 4x4 range rover that is in fact a discovery with little room inside and very low roof and no split tailgate. So for me it was the TDV8 Full Size Range Rover. You have to drive both to understand the differences. I would avoid the TD6 engine if you can, its capable but that all. Be warned that if your budget doesn't stretch to a TDV8 version then don't ever drive one. Nothing will compare (apart from the SC). The TDV8 is such an accomplished engine.

we've seen a 55reg range rover sport SC, tonga green,25k miles for £22000 and a 06reg td6 vogue same colour ,68k miles £22000 both good spec although dont have rear screens which we want(can this be retro fitted?) is the 30td6 that bad? coming from 4.5 cayenne we like the idea of getting a bit more mpg and something bigger but dont really want to end up with something that aint the best thing to drive everyday. is the tdv8 engine that much more superior?
thanks
thanks
All the above sounds about right. My previous car was a Maserati 3200 (remapped to 420bhp 0-60 in 5.x seconds) so I am used to a bit of speed. I also had a TD5 Disco2 (remapped)which was as slow as anything. I had read a lot about the TDv8 and the TD6 before buying. I couldn't be happier with the TDV8 as a compromise of smoothness and power. You honestly wouldn't know you were driving a diesel. As for economy you can easily get around 30mpg if you are careful . I dont care much for MPG and drive how I see fit and cant get below 24mpg. Please please try one before you buy anything. If its out of budget I would go petrol V8 all day over the TD6. If you are based near Southampton you are more than welcome to have a run out in mine.
Retro fit of rear screens is very readily available.

Is that your maximum budget?
Reason I ask is I have a 2006 Supercharged Vogue SE for sale in the classifieds

Anyway, to answer your question, the "full fat" big Range Rover is the one to have without a doubt.
It's a whole different car, and one that you will not be able to touch for luxury this side of a Bentley. I averaged around 18MPG with mine, and yes, it goes like the clappers when you put your foot down - makes a lovely V8 growl with accompanying supercharger whine
