HGF sums it up really although I gather the freelander gaskets are the ones to have post HGF.
Not sure I'd want that engine in a larger car, its not a particularly torquey engine.
I suppose it rather depends how you mum drives or wants to drive. Assuming she isn't the current ladies rally champion and just wants to get about in the snow then I imagine it would be ok.
Just look very carefully at the header tank and oil. Might be worth having the coolant tested for exhaust gases.
