Which engine in a Freelander
Discussion
OK I'm looking to update the wife's car, and the Freelander looks a good choice, there are several around localy, at a price I want to pay, (I'm in Malaysaia), she currently has a small Diahatsu 4 wheel so the Freelander is a logical step. see http://www.mudah.my/Land+Rover+Freelander+2+5+A+V6... or http://www.mudah.my/Land+rover+freelander+2+0+dies... for the sort of thing I'm interested in.
I've read the post on the here on the TD4 and it looks fine, but I'm not worried by petol prices 40p a liter and the petrol engine car above is nearly 2000 pound cheaper, and insurance is not an issue so I'm thinking about the V6 2.5, any one know about this engine? what are spares like? is it basically a Honda? if a Honda then routine parts will not be a problem for me. Car will never go offroad or see snow, but will e used on Motorway.
Only real issue is road tax, a V6 will be around 300 pound ayear, while a Diesel will be less than 40, but I'm not worried by that.
Road tax is ine reason why I don't want a RR, I can get a super 4.6 for less money than the freelander but road tax is 1200 pound a year and it's to big for the city driving the wife does,

Petrol Freelanders dont have the best reputation.
1.8 k series engine has inherent problem if cooling system gets low on fluid for any reason which results in woeful head gasket failure.
V6 was mainly sold with an auto gearbox which never seemed to have right ratio ...so always changing gear.

Thanks, should have said will be an auto, so does the auto change up and down at Motor way speeds?
Know all about the 1800 my race mechanic makes a goood turnover changing head gaskets on MGF's and Rover 216, there are very few in the country but there always seams to be one at his place having the head done. Having said that there are 100 lotus Elise in Malaysia that were properly put together at the factory here, and are still maintained by the factory, after nearly 10 years, and they have no problem
