Taken delivery of a full set of new leaf springs today for my Series III today. Want to fit them over the weekend - anybody have any handy tips?

Get all new nuts and bolts (shackle and U) so that you have the freedom to cut them off.

You will need four axle stands, a pair for the axle and a pair for the chassis.

Replace only one at a time or else you can find that the axle floats about which can make things harder.

I assume you are not replacing chassis bushes as well......this is a whole other world of hurt smile

No, leaving the chassis bushes alone for the time being!

I'm a bit worried about taking the job on with a bottle jack and axle stands. Especially as I'll be working alone. Maybe time to invest in that high lift trolley jack...

unless you know your chassis bushes are excellent do them now. Otherwise not a hard job get plenty of grinding discs cut everything off and replace with new although that can cost i just replaced my springs and the bolts and chassis bushes came to £100!! this link has in it all the part numbers for the bits you'd need i brought genuine bits from LR series

One last tip dont do the shackle plates up tight theres ment to be a gap between them and the spring to allow the suspension to flex the nut on the end will prevent it coming loose

Thanks for that. The Springs are still in the back of the Land Rover - think I need to get some help to do the job. Really don't fancy trying it alone on my driveway with a bottle jack and axle stands. Likely to end up wearing a Land Rover on my face!

good job to give to a garage who work regular on series vehicles!!

give them the springs / new chassis bolts and new u bolts....tell them to just 'burn/cut' cut them off and scrap - and then fit new springs. [be good idea to replace shockers as well]

Make sure you identify springs correctly as drivers side different to nearside.

With a oxy/acet torch and lift its a half hour job to remove 4 springs.

Just get them to grease/copperslip all new bolts to make dis-assembly easier if you want to do chassis bushes.

When changing the chassis bushes - purchase a 'bush wackka' bush removal / installation tool - save being under the vehicle all weekend !!! smile
