Can side steps be easily removed without leaving holes or marks?

l'm thinking of buying a 2006/07 RRS TDV6 but a lot of them seem to come with side steps which l really don't like and therefore would want to remove them.

As i said before, you may have holes/marks in the mouldings on the lower side of the car, not the door mouldings.

Either way you shouldn't see any marks when the doors are shut.

If you're really bothered, give an LR Service Dept a call. When mine were fitted they did explain that you have to cut into the moulding to fit them.

I don't fancy taking mine off to check. wink

Hi Greenpis,

You obviously know lots about LR so was wondering if I bought a RRS privately could I get a proper full LR warranty on it?

How would it work as I imagine a LR dealer would need to inspect it first, etc.

Ha Ha, I don't know that much about LR. The little I do know has only been through the 'ownership experience', with a LR you can tend to get quite familiar with the Dealer Service Manager and staff. wink

If the 3 year manufacturer warranty has not expired yet, then the owner would be contacted by mail inviting you to take up a LR extended warranty prior to the car reaching 3 years old.
AFAIK, if the manufacturer warranty has already expired you can still buy the LR extended warranty. There are two options, with differing cover, for cars up to 5 & 7 years old (I think).
Don't think you will need to have the car inspected by a LR Dealer, I didn't anyway. I think conditions of the warranty are that you declare any modifications, and that it has been serviced according to the manufacturer's schedule, not necessarily with a LR Dealer.
All the details are on the LR website. The warranty is actually run by an unrelated company using LR branding.
As mine is now 4 years old I have had the LR extended warranty, and has paid out for a couple of things, including a new audio unit!
One good part is a MOT warranty where parts that fail an MOT which might normally be classed as consumables are covered. I have claimed on that as well.
It's not cheap, I pay £880 a year which includes LR Assistance - Although this is now provided by the AA. But this includes hire car provision if your car is immobilised by a fault.
One other good thing is you can pay monthly, if you were to sell the car half way through the year, you just cancel the warranty and have nothing further to pay. So it's a bit like 'pay as you go', whereas a waaranty paid up front wouldn't always offer a refund for the unused portion.
I have heard of other people using other much cheaper warranty providers, and Tesco Finest has a good reputation. With many people on Disco3.co.uk using them and been very happy with the coverage and claim process.

Remember if you do buy an RRS with sidesteps, you would be able to sell them for £200 if in good condition. Best place to sell them would be www.rrsport.co.uk, also very good place for useful advice on anything RRS related.

I have a mate who has a 57 plate RRS TDV6 with 21k miles. We're trying to work out a sensible value for it and then proceed from there.

If they are anything like my neighbours RRS they will fall off on their own. Corroded to hell, and only a few years old. LR weren't interested!

My pleasure, sounds like the best position to be in. I.e. he gets a a decent private sale price and you don't have to pay dealer price, but still know some history to the car.

A warranty on these cars is a must, as labour rates at LR Dealers are around £125 per hour. I haven't used an Indy yet for anything, and whilst they will probably provide a more personal service than some LR Dealers, some of the stranger problems on the RRS mean they have to go into a LR Dealer.

depends on the model, spec and colour - but i just bought a black 58 plate with 10k miles for £31k

It is a HSE in Stornaway Grey with black leather + cold climate pack & sunroof.

The warranty is about to run out so I need to allow for that (LR inspection + warranty approx. £1k) + I'd want the side steps removed as well as replacing the 22" wheels with 20" Stormer wheels & tyres (approx. £1500).

What do you reckon it's worth?

Stornoway is second most in demand colour behind black, so no reduction in price value for the colour.

Reasonably low mileage.

I would think a reasonable pivate sale price would be between 25 to 26k, you may have a problem with pricing it with the 22s on it though.

He may expect a premium for them, whereas you're looking at cost to replace them.

IMO he is limiting his market with the 22s, and therefore their value.

The RRS can be a bit crashey on 20s, so I would recommend removing the 22s.

That seems to be a reasonable figure(s) in that case.

How much do you think a LR dealer would put it on their forecourt for?

If the car had standard 20's on, I would think LR would put up anywhere between 27 and 29k. With room to take an offer.

They would have offered between 23 and 24k as a part ex.

Bear in mind the LR Dealer sale price will include a years LR warranty, worth approx £1k, as well.

The 22' wheels would be a factor though, as LR Dealers should only market the car with 'standard' LR modifications/accessories. LR don't supply or approve 22's (Think there is an anomoly with Overfinch 22's, being approved, but that is LR for you.)
So a LR Dealer would factor in the cost of making the car standard, replacing the 22's, in the part ex price. Probably between £1 and 2k.

Lots of numbers for you to play with there.

WRT to the inspection before taking out the warranty, it would make sense to get the car onto 20's before the inspection. As mentioned above, LR don't approve wheels above 20', they have before and will exclude claims related to steering and suspension where cars have had wheels in excess of 20'. Technically, they wouldn't cover wheels of 20' and below that are not LR supplied or 'approved' i.e. Overfinch. Not sure of other suppliers that are LR approved.
