Original Spec Wheels and Tyres - SIII Land Rover

I've just bought an 88" Series III that is on a set of OK-ish but not original wheels and tyres.

I would like to get it back to original spec, can anyone tell me what size wheel and tyre it would have been supplied with new?

Alot were supplied with 600 x 16 with avon traction type treads.

Most owners banged on a set of 7.50 x 16 tyres at the first opportunity as this raised the clearance under the diff and also helped on cosmetic looks and raised the gearing slightly. [7.50 x 16 standard on 109's]
Downside was the larger tyre reduced the steering lock, so people fitted Forward Control rims on the front axle as they had a wider offset and therefore increased the steering lock. [these wheels were later fitted to 127 defenders and still available]

Thats all I can remember from the 70's ....oh I had hair then as well !!

Originally 600's on SWB rims for a shortie and 750's on lwb rims for the 109's LWB rims have more offset and you can get forward control\130 rims with even more offset to push the wheels to the edge of the arches. you can get them from Vass here http://www.vass.co.uk/specials.asp?TyreID={94992A8... they also have differant tyres depending on your needs for road use you cannot beat these and they come on the rims to. I run 750 goodyear G90's on wolf rims on my 2a

I want the car to look as original as possible, so will probably be looking at 600's (also the opening to my garage is not that high, so anything that lowers it a bit will be a bonus.

One more question - how would I know a SWB rim from a LWB rim?

Hi

SWB rims will be 5" wide, LWB rims will be 5.5" with various offsets, 1 ton / 127" are 6.5"
