Is it me or are the latest Land Rovers (Discovery 4, 2011 Range Rover) just a little too "bling" for their own good? You could imagine taking the earlier models going off road. The grills on the new ones look like they are only meant for rap videos and WAGs. Obviously there is a target market for these cars but it's quite a shame to see them go this way when Jaguar are currently getting it all very right. I know the RR Sport has always been bling, but even the Mk.1 looked better than the Mk.2 in that respect.

My bugbear is that the Sport looks too much like the full RangeRover. Park two black ones next to each other and at a glance you'd struggle to tell them apart from front-on. If I had spend £80k on a RangeRover I'd be irritated by this.

Might be the case when you park them separately but park them together and the FFRR stands out a mile in comparison... it positively looms over an RRS

Absolutely. Saw a pair both in grey parked nose to tail this afternoon, and the RRS looks like the very poor stumpen stepchild next to the proper Rangie.

OP - I think you may be right about the D4, not so sure about the FFRR and RRS, in fact I'd go so far as to say that lights off, the Rangies look a little more dour than their earlier incarnations, whereas the D3 looked staid and the D4 is blinged up - the tail lights annoy me, even when off.

Trouble is.... then you turn the lights on..... and it looks like the ghost of christmas past. That nice FFRR bluff nose with a silly wiggle of dotted lights as if half of them aren't working. I despise the Audi LED lights, but IMHO Porsche / Merc have got it right: solid straight lines, nothing fancy. The daft curves on the D4 / RRS / FFRR are preposterous.

I agree on the stupid lights in the D4 and the FFRR. They all look stupid, Porsche, Audi and also Landrover and I guess that it is a fad which will disappear as quickly as it came along.

The lights are about the only think which I dislike on my D4. I have had it for a year and 15k miles here in Austria now and it is a great car which almost is as good as my RR back in the UK. In value for money terms the D4 is the better car IMHO.

Unfortunately the 'fad' will be here to stay as under new laws, all new cars are to have them fitted from 2012/14 (can't remember which) as a requirement!!

I was really hoping that'd be in Los Angeles but looking at the roadside furniture and the plate on the car behind "it" I'm guessing it's that ttty Westfield shopping mall or somewhere similar?
I guess someone thinks they're some sort of Retail Swat Team.
