P38 do I want one?
Discussion
In a bit of dilemma with my current car situation, at the moment I am running a 90 which is just about perfect spec bar tyres for what I want in a Defender.
Galv chassis
Discs all around
Low mileage 200tdi
Polybushed
Fancy suspension shocks
Diff gaurds
Safari snorkely
Wading kit.
Now I bought this with intent of using for work, need to haul heavy equipment, also needed to get me through the floods each year going back and forth to what was going to be my new workshop, things changed and I now no longer need it, I am doing more long journeys, and I miss my creature comforts. I need a car which is
4x4 live in a rural area where for once 4x4 is needed for yearly flooding and I do some shooting so need a vehicle capable of driving through some mud and fields if needs be.
Needs to be big, take 3 dogs
Needs leather, electric, heated seats
Needs to be fairly quiet and nice to drive
Needs to be able to tow
Needs to be around the 3k mark
Which leads me to the P38 preferably the 4.6HSE even though they have the engine problems, which is about the only thing that worries me, how much is it to replace the engine if it was to fail?
And also why is it so hard to find a decent sub 120k mile P38 without a stupid LPG conversion, had LPG before and to me it is just a false economy and takes up valuable room, if I did have to stump for one with LPG what would I make selling the set up and are they usually a drilled into the manifold type affair if so, how much is it roughly for a new manifold, I know it seems odd, but I had a vehicle with LPG already fitted from factory and, I used it 4 times just wasn't worth the hassle, and it would have problems, something I wish to avoid.
Ideally I would love a RRC but I can't find a decent Vogue, and the rest have all been f
ked up by the off road boys

We are considering selling our P38 Vogue (no lpg) and moving to a 4.2 Supercharged new shape. It's a very late one June 02 and done only 73k miles.
Mail me and I'll send full details.
You think good P38's are rare. Try to find a 4.2 with plane cream leather. Rocking horse s
te comes to mind.

As for LPG taking up spare wheel space, given the choice at the side of the road with a puncture I would take a spare wheel all day as opposed to an LPG kit, I point blank refuse to have valuable space taken up by something I will never use, also find it horrendous when they have cut that stupid looking filler cap into the body work, totally devalues the look of the car.

An incremental £30 a year seems very little when it costs more than 3 times that to fill the tank but everyone to their own.Go with a 4.0SE, or if your budget will stretch to one, a 4.0HSE/Vogue/Westminster.
P38's are great motors, mine had LPG and it was well worth having - a trip from Shropshire to Cumbria and back was two tanks of LPG, for around £75. In petrol it would have cost me around £65 each way.

Did you send me a PM?
What do you want to know about the Defender?
Dennis, not yet, I need to finish up some work on my Defender before I sell it and have the cash to go for a P38.
ETA: Scott, honestly I would rather pay the extra £65 in petrol than use LPG it is not an accessory I wish for, I have had a vehicle with LPG factory fitted, and it was too much hassle to fill both tanks, and then it would break and need something, then you would fill it up do 100miles and have to stop and refill it, I went Newport to Royston and most of the way back on one tank of petrol, it would have required 4-5 stops if I had used LPG, I hate the system, and on long journeys it would just eat LPG, plus the price of LPG is going up so again no real point for the extra effort involved in using it.

You must have had a terrible LPG system! My RRC had a twin underslung tank setup and took no longer to fill than the single tank setup on the P38. One other advantage for larger cars on the new tax system is that if registered with LPG they are classed as an alternative fuels car, and therefore escape the higher tax rates. A friend of mine has a 2002 P38, and he pays around £190 p/a tax if I remember correctly.

Regardless of LPG or not though, go for a 4.0 engine - do you really want the hassle of replacing the 4.6?
Just an idea, but how much are Classic Overfinch 570Ti's going for these days?

It seems to vary. The 630 at Graeme Hunt was stellar at £35K but it sold. There has been a Lichfield classic in Bristol at 10K and he won't drop apparently (it may have sold by now).
Somewhere over in Leicestershire had a blue 570 which started at 10 and was down to 8 last time I saw it and it was an LSE. Have to say I quite fancied that one!
Would have to agree about your LPG system. My LSE cam fitted (which I actively wanted) I have 2 underslung 40L tanks so I can get 60 ish litres in. That gets me 200 miles - granted its in 5 or so journeys so some of it is on petrol but less than 10% usually.

get a P38
love them. best looking Range Rover imo
had one in the family brand new, was great then, great today
never developed a problem, but it was new
S reg 4.6 HSE, had it 60,000 miles
I think the people we sold it to still have it running daily, not sure on that though, haven't seen them for a year or so
want one with LPG, but they seem overvalued when presented for sale with LPG, may just end up with petrol

Just bought a '99 4.6 HSE with 70k on it as a winter smoker. We can get pretty severe weather here in the Midwest and I think my Camaro will be pretty useless come the snow. Plus I sell LR's so it's nice to drive the marque. First impressions are very good, I had one new in '95 and it was less than reliable but this one is nice and seems to be in good shape. And I do have a workshop full of LR mechanics in the back if it goes wrong....
It does seem a bit sluggish after a day spent driving 510 BHP supercharged Sports though.

Blimey, I would have thought a few spare sparkplugs, drive belt, hoses and some tools etc. a wise precaution, I'd never have taken it quite that far! No wonder it feels bit sluggish, especially if they all carry their tools with them It does seem a bit sluggish
