Appreciate PH is less of a tech forum, but thought I'd ask as I'm rapidly clutching at fewer and fewer straws here.....

Vehicle is a Defender TD5 (MY2000) with the analogue instruments but digital odometer.
The speedo, fuel gauge and temp gauge are all fed from the same power supply, and all go to the same earth, and all three are mis-reading.
The fuel gauge is being over-sensitive and going from half-full to off the bottom of the scale when cornering, and generally under reads. Temp gauge seems to under read until the engine is fully warmed up.
The speedo has given up altogether and now just occasionally "bounces" up to about 10mph then floats slowly back down to zero.
The bulkhead earth is good, the power supply is good, the multiplug on the back of the instrument pack has been cleaned up.....I'm assuming (?) this is an earth/ecu fault but where next?
Does the main ECU under the driver's seat have any influence?

Have a look to see if there is any oil in the ecu plug. Normal signs are misfies but worth a check. I am guessing that if it is all 3 gauges then your earth/+12v/senders are not ok. Recheck the connections and the voltages you are getting at the terminals.

Yeah it's had a bit of oil in the ECU plug before, just wanted to see if it was worth a look as it's a ball-ache getting the (after-market) seats out.

It gets better....speedo now bounces up to around 30mph, so I might just leave it and let it cure itself.silly

For them what's interested, a quick update.....
Checked the multiplug on the back of the instrument pod.....OK.
Checked the bulkheads earths.....ditto.
Cleaned the usual oil out of the red ECU plug.....speedo now reading again but still a little wayward. Hunts around a bit and occasionally drops by about 10mph then picks up again.
Once the Ice Age is over I'm revisting the plug with more contact cleaner.

Hi, I'm new here and reached the forum while doing a search to try to find the cause of vibrations in my recently purchased 2005 D110 Td5. (I'm still looking!).

If there is oil in the red connector at the ECU I'd suggest it is coming down from the injector wiring harness and en route entering the black multipin connector just outside and below the injector cover. Because of the metal contamination in used oil, the oil is conductive. So, it is proably shorting between the pins in that connector, hence the symptoms. (It was in mine giving rise to rough running). Hope that sounds logical! So cleaning the oil out of the red connector might not solve your problem.

I have just replaced the injector wiring harness in my TD5 even though the oil had not yet penetrated to the red connector at the ECU. That has cured that problem....but I am still left with the original vibration.

Have you checked the propshafts?

Front propshaft is prone to causing vibrations on acceleration, especially when the power has been turned up! biggrin
I've fitted uprated propshafts from Bailey Morris. Not cheap, but cured the problem.

Hopefully it's sorted, but have you checked the main body to engine earth?

Yep, weird one but it turned out to be nothing more complicated than a knackered speed sensor on the transfer box.

Even my local indy dismissed this, as had I, as the speedo was giving intermittent readings instead of dying altogether.
