I'm currently enjoying my Series 2a Landy at the moment, particularly as it is tax exempt and £120 full comp! Trouble is, I'm getting to like this 4x4 thing and may be tempted to invest in a late Defender, say less than 10 years old. What's the tax and insurance like for one? I don't know how the taxing works these days because I'm only paying £180 tax for my Noble. Yet I believe 4x4s can be £400 plus?

Hi.

Rather then write a lot I'll just point you here:

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicl...

Ideally you want a pre-2001 car. If you get a post 2001 car you need to be careful, even if it's not high tax now the goberment have been threatening to apply the post 2006 rules to all post 2001 cars.

This:

http://www.carpages.co.uk/guide/land-rover/land-ro...

Suggests that any defender will be in the top road tax bracket, assuming the diesels have the lowest Co2 emissions.

A late Defender is going to cost you around £12k - £15k. The incremental road tax is £30 or so so why are you worrying. Even if you went for a post March 2006 it's only a couple of hundred on a £20k vehicle.

It's nothing in the scheme of things so don't worry and enjoy the benefits of the later vehicles.

You do have a point. I suppose I'm looking at it from a miles per tax point of view. I already run 4 vehicles and the Landy would only be used occasionally, so £400 tax for lets say 2000 miles is pretty poor. I drive my Noble an awful lot and get great value from insurance and tax. Does that make sense or is it this 'festive Scrooge' thing I've got going?laugh

Get a pre 2001 model and pay £205. If you are worried about miles per tax, have you considered what it'll cost miles per insurance which wont be cheap.

At the end of the day, motoring is becoming very expensive and if I'm going to run four vehicles I shouldn't be moaning about the costs. There for the Grace of God and all that! I suppose ultimately I'd be pushing my luck owning a late Defender and a Noble as both would just be toys. So the question is: could I live without the Noble and go 4x4? Or, do I put the wife on the game and have both?rolleyes

Hi Burnhund, Just read your profile as I have an M12. You didn't have your french accident at Le Mans 2006 did you? We saw a very nasty crash at Houx on the Sunday involving a speedster replica. Glad you recovered and went for a sensible car, the Noble!

Hi Troy, you are absolutely right, that was me at LeMans! I did a lot of research looking for any info on the incident. Never found any video or grisly pictures unfortunately. I was keen to see what I looked like with the facial injuries etc.
I did get some good feed back from Pistonheads though and a lot of support.

Wow! That was some crash! We were camping next to the road near the woods at the entrance to the Houx, I was in my old black 944. You kept us entertained all day with the fantastic sound of the Speedster. It really was a heredous sound when it crashed. We looked for details for ages afterwards but all we could fid was a debate about the car that hit you. Brilliant that you got through it. I guess from the sound of your injury you were the passenger in the crash. We still talk about it know. That was the best Le Mans ever up to your accident.

Great to here you have a Noble. I can't get used the way it goes, looks and turns heads. Went to Le Mans in mine this year. God knows what I will get next if I ever replace it!

The Speedster was seriously quick with the Hayabusa engine and handled quite well really. What made it particularly nice though was the fact nobody expected it to go like it did and of course the exhaust I had made up for it sounded fantastic. I had planned to twin turbo it too but ran out of the green stuff!
Would love to know what the crash looked and sounded like but I lost 5 years memory and have no recollection at all. Here's a piccy of one of my Xrays!

Anyway, I've been desperate to go back in the Noble, but the wife says NO.
Next year it's got to happen.

Trust me mate its one of those sounds that you really don't want to hear! I can still remember it now even 2+ years later. We sat on the grass verge watching you go up and down, couldn't get enough of the noise it made! We didn't take any pictures of the crash, didn't seem right given how serious it was. How was the other guy, he didn't look as bad as you?

This'll make you laugh. The fella driving my car worked for me and still does, an accident is an accident at all that, well he got 6 stitches in his left elbow. I got smashed hip socket, pin through knee, broken arm, broken 3 ribs, jaw broken into 3, cheekbones cracked, broken nose, missing teeth, 3 stomach injuries, both lungs punctured, a tracheotomy and 12 pints of blood. Left arm has 6 screws and some titanium, jaw has 2x2in plates and 8 screws. Check out the next Xray and look at the little wires that go up the sides to my ears to hold the jaw up!

I'd still have that car back tomorrow, it was stunning. But.... could no longer live without the Nob.

proper bionic man! No wonder your wife worries about the Nob! Looks like the medics from the near by team did a great job!

I guess the Landrover has been in use over the last few days? I have a Freelander and despite the bad press its been fantastic! The hill decent took us down a steep ice/snow covered hill without as much as a little slip.

Really great talking to you but my battery is about to go. Hopefully catch you again soon. Are you on PH often?

Yep, good luck and been great to hear from someone who was there that year. I'm often on PH Noble forum. Will catch up sometime. Cheers

I'll look through my pictures and see if I have one of you car during the weekend. Most of the ones I took were of the S200 and pirate ship on the roundabout on Friday night. Maybe catch up at a rally next year if you get th Nob out!
