Should i go for a 3.5v8 or a 300tdi 90?
Discussion
I have 2 90's to buy tomorrow
i cant decide on which one!
both are 1987 with all the off road gear
the 300tdi is a hard top with side windows and no winch
the v8 is also a hard top no windows and winch.
tdi is g4 orange and 50 miles away
v8 is army camo and 1 mile away
so what you think lads?
Its purely a boys toy, will not be used for commuting etc so running costs dont matter!

When your offroading do you like deep water? The 300 loves it the v8 hates it. Also do you have much expirience with carbs, the ones on the v8 will require fettling regulary. The v8 isn't that much more powerfull than the 300 either, but in a landrover of that age the 300tdi will have been retro fitted so it's worth checking that the conversions been done properly. And the 300tdi can be tuned pretty easily, have a look at the allisport website.
The winchy bit is largely irrelevant as you "should" consider replacing the cable and other crucial bits anyway.
Neither colour on offer would float my boat....G4 orange is just yukky, and camouflage always has a hint of Fast Show "It's gripped!" about it. If I had to choose it'd be the Tango truck.
Engine wise, if you can afford the horrific running costs, go for the V8.
And distance shouldn't be a player. If it's the right car, you'll travel.

How often is regularly? I have SU's on my Bowler and generally check the settings once a year during a service (12,000 miles P.A.) Other than that all they need is a top up with oil in the dashpots which can be checked when you check the other fluids...once set up they are trouble free.100SRV said:

its the one in the link, a pretty good buy for 2800 i think! solid panels, bulkhead, doors and a clean chassis. I viewed it saturday and did the deal today, so collecting it in the morning and handing over the cash.
I will take some pics of it in the snow via my diversion home
The gearbox is a auto, no idea what make but i presume the engine and box are out of a rangie as thats what usually happens! It used to be a farmers 2.5na diesel in blue at some point in its life before morphing into this monster!

?£1900 in the listing?
Still. Looks awsome.
He ended early for me as the seller happened to be a friend of a few friends of mine so bought it off him for 2800 which seems a bargain for what it is and all the off road gear on it! nothing anywhere near that spec for that price in the country at the moment!Still. Looks awsome.
does have a couple issues like the carbs needing a service due to overfuelling or something, spotlights reconnected and a oil leak fixed, but apart from that is very solid, rust free and straight for its age!
One thing ive noticed, its got a auto box with the usual auto stick and it has a little lever next to it for Low and High, how do i engage the diff lock then? as i could have done with locked diffs earlier due to all the power going to one wheel with the least resistance on a steep ice and snow covered hillside lane towing a van up,
I'm not really familiar with the range rover a_to box, does it still use lt230 transfer box? If so, you should be able to move the transfer lever in the x-axis (as in side-to-side). With the stick on the left you should be able to still select low and high but with the centre diff locked.
Unless they've been retrofitted, you won't have diff locks.
Air lockers will, obviously, need a compressor and will be switched from the cab. Alternatively, they could have electric lockers (also switched) or something like the detroit trutrak which is like a torsen diff locker iirc.
