We are looking for a Landy to tow a cccccccaravan (!) and to be an everyday car for the missus, and have been considering a Freelander. We are hoping to get a reasonable TD4 for about £4k or less. The thing is, I know all about Discos and Rangys but not much about the Freelander. We are struggling to find a decent TD5 Disco for this money, and don't wish to pay as much for a rotten 300TDi, but what problems are we likely to engounter with the TD4 Freelander (and how can you check the rear diff thingy is not knackered).

Hi,

I am doing the same myself and got some good advice - have a look at 'Buying a Freelander, TD4 - 2000-2003 - Any pitfalls? (Dec 2010) with 'Nodrog 1' as the person submitting. I have found the advice and the links useful.

Regards

Thanks.

I have now read some of this info and it backs up exactly what I'm thinking - buy a TD4 ES for about £4k. We are thinking of a 3-door as we like the idea of a 'convertible'

Just bought a 2005 TD4 auto Freelander, seems to be a great motor (owned a discovery years ago) and after fitting new rear shoes and drums, EGR removal mod, new crankcase filter, new rear door seal and full service, will hopefully be reliable. Owned a Rover 75 with the 1.8 K series engine, blew the headgasket at 65,000 miles so would never recommend the K series engine. It seems that (after reading all the various forum feedback, MG, Rover and Land Rover) that it is the exception rather than the rule if the headgasket does not fail (even after the modified gasket has been fitted).

Pretty good motors ... had mine for 4 years, only one breakdown and that was caused by the fuel pump gaving up the ghost...

One things I did notice it's not the best on the long drives, noise mainly... but I liked it so much and replaced it with a Freelander2.
