£20k Range Rover Sport - Money pit?
Discussion
Been looking at Freelander 2s to replace our aging FL1.
However, I'm keen on a high spec (HSE) auto version and prices continue to be sky high - £18k+ for something decent.
That puts the FL2 firmly into RRS territory and, for that kind of money, I'd like to driving something that feels a little more special than the FL2.
Now I know that a RRS will cost more to run than a FL2 but, to an extent a shallower depreciation curve for the RRS will even things out a little. Also, I've got a trusted local indie to look after me if things do go wrong.
We only do 8k miles a year so an 80k mile V8 RRS wouldn't frighten me too much in terms of fuel costs, but am I kidding myself on how many expensive things could go bang on a 5 year old RRS compared to a 3 year old FL2?

Hi - it will cost you more in terms of tyres and brakes, the EPB will sometimes need attention and the air suspension is always a little bit of a worry.
You could always look out for a 3 or so year old Disco 3 thats still in warranty? OK the same 'worries' but someone else might foot the bills.

Colleague of mine has a 55 plate 2.7V6 RRS and quite literally runs it in a show string budget! They can be as pricey or as cheap as you fancy.
Hes had it 3 years and has never serviced it at LR, getting all work carried out by a local specialist. Bar Tyres and brakes etc he hasn't replaced anything!
I bought a V8 HST on Wednesday, I will NOT be following suite, butthen that's just me.........

Funnily enough, my parents were in a similar position a few years ago. To replace our FL1, it was a choice of either a new FL2 or a used RRS - they went for the RRS
Lovely car, much better than a FL2, IMO. I've personally driven the car over a couple of thousand miles, and as you implied, it has more of a special feel about it.
Running costs have been high, as it's a 4.2S
As mentioned, the brakes and tyres are more than a FL2, when my parents compared costs in this area.
Worth bearing in mind is that suspension bushes are consumable items which will need replacing sooner than those on the Disco which it is based. Our near 60k mile example has had all the suspension bushes replaced now - the most recent were last week - just listen for knocking when going over bumps. Other than this, the car's been extremely reliable, with no major problems to report.
I would say go for a definately go for a RRS, but make sure it has a decent warranty, simply for piece of mind
