Hi, building a kit car of sorts using a manual v8 1995 disco for the donor. For space reasons I had to ditch the rusty hedgehog type gearbox oil cooler. Which still leaves me with the pipework. I wondered as a lot of 300tdi defenders do not have them. And they share the same r380 box. Is it really required?
Any suggestions?

I think the oil cooler on manual v8 dico was standard, so I would be inclined to keep it. I have a diesel Defender and am considering a cooler for my R380 for hot weather.

Assuming you don't intend to be towing 3.5 tons across the Sahara then no...... Realistically in a country with our climate in a car that has relatively low performance and I assume you won't be towing with there's just no need.
