The need to accommodate 3 car seats has got me looking at used Range Rovers as the wife's/family car and I found a lovely 32k mile Vogue 3.0TDV6 SE at my local dealership. As you'd expect it has all the toys, but I'm told that the engine isn't anywhere near as good, or as 'economical' as the TDV8. This particular car is about £10k cheaper than a newer, yet higher milage Vogue TDV8 at the same dealership, but that £10k could pay for a lot of fuel.

Is the TDV8 worth the extra, or will you not really see that much difference in terms of performance and efficiency? I'm told the 3.0 TDV6 gets about 23-25mpg on average, is this likely to be realistic?

I'm fairly sure it's a straight six.
I would go TDV8 everyday of the week if it were in budget.

No comparison.

Ah, my mistake! You are indeed correct.

I'm going to have to think hard about that one then. The TD6 Vogue SE was like new and seemed a great price in comparison. I guess there's a reason for that! Some of the newer cars I have seen look like they have been up the Eiger and back! Perhaps living in Wales a lot of them get used properly!

It's like night and day.

The TDV8 is miles better in every respect.

Having owned an TD6 vogue for nearly 2 years, here's my take. Mine averages about 22mpg in mainly town driving, up to 27ish on runs. There are some comprises with the engine - performance and sound, but it's far from 'disgraced' and having recently looked at TDV8's which I can't find for much under £30k, I can't justify the price uplift. It might be worth seeking out a slightly cheaper TD6 (unless you're ok to go for TDV8) that way, while there are some comprises with the TD6, you're also saving a lot of money. I have in no way been disappointed with my TD6 - bought as a family wagon, for the size / comfort and it's been perfect.

If I were in the TD Market I would look at what JE Engineering and Twisted performance can offer.
Good BHP uplift for the money.

This. Td6 is a good engine but will always be overshadowed by the tdv8. What's your budget for a RR?
You could find buying a 4.4 v8 and converting it to LPG may be a good idea if you do a reasonable mileage/are going to keep the car for a few years. The bmw v8 (02-05 model years) have no issues with running on it.

Short answer,£10k more no way. The bmw td6 engine is not bad at all, have just cruised through germany at 110,115 mph with no trouble, and engine seems to run better than ever.

Have a TDV8 as a family wagon. Great car and love the engine. Having driven a td6 I would say stretch if you can. Re the three car seats though??? I would try it as we have two recaro seats in the back of ours and we can't fit a third in the middle.

Agree with the 3 seats caution. We too have 2x recaro and 1 x baby seat front facing, they fit fine in the Disco 3 but were very tight in a FFRR we had as a hire car.

Is the new FFRR out next year wider?

Thanks for the comments guys. The above caution regarding the 3 seats is something that I will have to try properly before I make up my mind. I did try my existing 2 seats in one at the dealership, but I'll have to go along with the baby seat too.

The more I find myself looking at the FFRR, the more I want one, so I don't want to get my hopes up and find I can't get 3 seats in comfortably after all!

Re the three seats. I have the same issue. Our current two are in boosters and another on the way. There does not seem anyway we can fit into a FFRR having measured it at the weekend. The dealer was actively telling us not to try as the seats are just too narrow due to the wheel arch intrusion. The RRS can just fit but with bruised knuckles. By far and away the best fit is the Disco plus added benefit of the seven seats when they get old enough to start buckering!!!

Solution found:

http://www.multimac.co.uk/4_child_car_seat

Something I was intending to invent myself, but somebody beat me to it! I still have a better solution but haven't got time to patent it and put it into production!

its not the red TD6 at James Edwards Chester by any chance.

I would say that is a good buy.

I have 05 plate TD6 and it tows / cruises along alright.

Grass is always greener and the TDV8 is a stonking engine... but that car is a good buy.

That was one of the cars I had in mind, however the silver one at Conwy seemed to be an even better proposition.
