Range Rover Sport - Costs
Discussion
Really like the look of the RR Sport. Would possibly consider a used one for my next vehicle.
Just wondering however; what are the running costs like compared to a normal car (say A5 / 3 series)? Are the tyres and brakes very expensive? Is servicing any more expensive than normal cars?
I would probably have to look at a diesel due to fuel costs but out of interest what mpg do people get from the supercharged petrol?
Cheers,
Adrian

Servicing costs will depend on if you use the Land Rover Network or an independent.
LR typically between £300 to £500 depending on Service A or B, and the Dealer. Different dealers charges vary and most will price match. Indys should be a fair bit cheaper.
Brakes and tyre wear will be higher than usual due to the weight being 2.7t. Wheel size will make a difference, 20's range in price from £140 to 280 per corner depending on brand.
My 20's Contis will have lasted approx 20k miles when they will need changing in a couple of months.
Brake pads were changed on mine at 30k, for £250 all round at a LR Dealer. Expect this is expensive and a good indy could have done them for half the price.
If it's older than 3yrs a good warranty is a must, as plenty of electrics/tronics to fail.
All in all, not as bad as you might think.
S/C mpg - between 8 and 18 I found on test drives. But I went diesel, so maybe a S/C owner will give a better view.

The above is spot on really.
I run a TDV8 and average about 21mpg but that includes quite a bit of town driving. My tyres are due now and 20" Hankooks get great feedback on the RRS forums and come in at only £120-£130 each, so not so bad.
Mines just 3 years old and I have 2 very good LR specialists local to me which was a factor before I bought mine. Dealer prices seem very high!! So have a look around before buying.
IMO the only downside to having one is you'll struggle to better it next time

I've run a TDV6 just over 5 years from new. Prior to that I had a Merc CLK320 which I also had for 5 years from new. Mileage on each similar. The sport has been far cheaper to run & far more reliable.
I'd agree on the servicing costs at around 300-500. Otherwise I've done 1 set of pads, 3 sets of front tyres, 2 set of rears in 5yrs 65k. No other costs or problems.

To answer your original query, I believe around 15mpg is around par for the Supercharged. I've just purchased one, and the dealer is currently getting it converted to lpg for me. There are plenty of horror stories about converting the Supercharged, but the converters seem to be confident that it can now be done without issue, and I'll have a warranty on the car and conversion.Just wondering however; what are the running costs like compared to a normal car (say A5 / 3 series)? Bottom line is you wouldn't really compare the running costs with an A5 or 3 series, but it doesn't need to be that painful either! There are plenty of independent specialists who are really great and have extremely reasonable labour rates. Once you get one, RRS or FFRR, it just seems worth it!
Service intervals bloody annoying at a fixed 12 months
TDV8 here
24mpg average since last summer
It does 30mpg on a motorway trip if you 'keep it real'
Drove 800 miles in one hit (twice) thro France at 140kph and got 26mpg within the above average
At a guess I see approx 20mpg in town
Beautiful car
Have a set of winters on 19" rims and its unstoppable
A keeper as I dont know what to replace it with
And once again I never ever saw myself in one until a test drive

I have just purchased a RR Sport 2007 model, what warranty would you recommend I should go for and avoid the risk of failed electronics? thanks LR typically between £300 to £500 depending on Service A or B, and the Dealer. My co-director has a Nov '15 RRS. Developed an oil leak last month and has been at the dealers for two weeks while they fix it. Still under warranty so just an inconvenience. I wouldn't by a used one without a JLR warranty.
That is hardly useful advice unless you are planning to give people the money they need to buy one new enough with factory warranty. Instead of living in the clouds, maybe visit planet Earth for a bit.
I've probably been lucky with my two RRS's (a 2005 & 2010) but they have been pretty much hassle free.
Both bought privately with good provenance and subsequently maintained by a garage who understand the brand. Electrical issues have usually kicked off because of a duff battery so an easy fix.
No idea what a used warranty would cost but for one of these, imagine it would be so full of exclusions as to not be worth the bother. Good luck with it though, a good one is a great car whatever the spec.

Warranty on my Discovery 3 has been about £600 a year, starting at 5 years/78k miles old.
It's covered:
Alternator
Suspension compressor
Brake caliper
Suspension wishbones & bushes
LP fuel pump
HP fuel pump
Torque converter
EGR valve
all at a £60/hour labour rate
it's not covered:
Door locks
Suspension reservoir (corrosion)
Brake pipes (corrosion)
Battery
Brake light switch
There might be more, I can't remember. It's been comfortably worthwhile for the four years I've owned it, that's for sure.

Blimey, that's more like an advert for not buying a LR in the first place! It's covered:
