Cos I want one! biggrin Having sold my lovely V8 Classic, I am on the lookout for a decent, solid Tdi, ideally a 300Tdi auto with leather but can be flexible for the right car. Budget is around £1,500, maybe £2k but I won't pay over the odds, so no stupidly-optimistically priced cars, please - I know what they're worth!

Anyway, anyone got one or know of one please let me know!

No idea what he wants for it mind.
I put a note onto the LZ thread too.

Thanks DKL - already spotted it and spoken to the chap, but he wants about £3,500 for it which is a bit rich for my liking! Nice looking car though!

Surely any decent, solid TDi Classic will be worth £2.5k plus?

Obviously there are deals to be had but I suspect you may be sorting through a lot of chaff.

Why did you sell the V8?

I'd have thought it would have been cheaper to swap in a Tdi tbh. Most facotry Tdi's are manuals, so finding an auto will make it a harder search.

Also if I'm honest, an auto Tdi Range Rover is quite pedestrian - at a local dealership when new they had a lovely looking metallic grey one which just wouldn't sell, it was foundly names "The Slug". And it truly was very slow.

Modded it might be ok, but still very slow, even by Land Rover standards.

Also not sure the mpg return will be worth it. If driven gentle you might get 25-28mpg out of one. But nearer the 24mpg mark is far more likely. Drive it hard and/or tune it and I see no reason why 19-21mpg wouldn't be an expected amount.

Few reasons really - the V8 was obscenely thirsty, 14mpg was 'good' 12mpg was more like it and 8-9mpg was seen - an £85 tank would get you 200 miles and it was only gonna get worse with current fuel prices!

A 200 or 300 Tdi on the other hand is more economical and can run on a mix of veg oil and diesel, bringing the running costs down further. Given I want to drive down to Morocco in it, that's important!

I don't like manuals in big cars, just dont think they suit, and personally I prefer an auto offroad too. Would consider a P38 DSE if I can't find a decent Tdi Classic, but in no rush!

No problem, just a thought.
What about another petrol one but with an LPG conversion?
I can't imagine you haven't thought of this so what made you go the diesel route?
I'm still getting the equivalent of 30mpg from mine even at 75 p a litre.

Hi DKL,

Yeah I'm not adverse to the LPG route - I love the V8 but there's a few pro's and con's for my usage. On the plus side, I reckon the running costs would be similar to a diesel, there's probably more choice of V8 LPG vehicles than Tdi's, and I love the noise of the V8 engine. However, most of them either have torpedo tanks underneath (no good for offroading) or a huge 90L tank in the boot (where I need the space) so I'd need to factor in the cost for a new tank, probably where the spare wheel currently sits. Also, for my trips through the Pyrennes and down to Morocco, LPG is likely to be in short supply compared to diesel, so may end up running on petrol again! And diesel are better at wading in deep water than petrols. Lastly, in the UK at least, I would run the Tdi on a diesel/veg oil mix, which would reduce the running costs further.

However, if the 'right' V8 LPG car came along I would probably still buy it smile

All valid reasons. I have twin 40l tanks where the old petrol tank is. This works fine but actually the range isn't great - around 200miles.
Around here LPG stations are surprisingly thin on the ground.
Tanks in the boot are ugly and take up space and torpedo tanks a problem for offroading although I have heard of them being used as rock sliders!

Yeah if I got an LPG car I couldn't lose the full size petrol tank, so I'd have to get an LPG tank where the spare wheel is, and then have a swingaway rear wheel carrier for the spare. So really, a Tdi would be ideal as it gets round both these problems/expenses - but then doesn't have that V8 burble either! Maybe I should just fit the latest TDV8 engine into a Classic?? ;-)
