Not often Defenders get much attention but just completely Waxoyled the underside of mine (rather fun!) and then did the usual snowfoam, wash, dry, polish. A few awkward bits make it quite a challenge! Bilberry works very well on the chequer plate!

Obligatory snow foam shot:

Lame reflection shot taking in the river we overlook:

Cheers!

You need to be quite dedicated to be honest but we think it's worth it.

1) 122bhp but 27mpg and top rate VED!!!
2) Slow
3) Noisy
4) Needs constant attention to prevent rust

However despite these "issues" we really do love it!

Surfboards also fit easily in the roof (me and wife surf a fair bit) - don't think you can do that in any other 4x4?

My dad used to have a disco on an L plate, so well aware of the: noisy, slow, constant attention and poor fuel economy parts.

They're just something I gotta own. Saw a brigh orange 90, with black wheels and bits, chavvy-tastic to the end, but I so would use it daily. There's a 110, 2x 90s and 1x 60s model in carpark at work. Mechanical fitters on a steelworks are fairly proactive in their tweeking it seems

mgm - they really get under your skin.

I really like our 335d - it's pretty quick, it's fairly practical, well made, comfy, etc, etc but the 110 somehow has something more about it that I really like. People seem to like it too - young and old. The BM just annoys a lot of other road users!

Couldnt agree more. Having owned a boyracer fiesta that the public hated, an Mg ZR that just always looked like my mums......and a heavily tuned 200SX that baffled the entire society whenever I drove carefuly and courteously, must admit that a LR 90/110 is about the only nation wide respectful option.

Even the OH loves em, and the mother (which matters as whatever heap I buy, resides on her driveway, and if it's a project, winds up filling 2x spare rooms with car parts) BONUS.

If I'd had the money (student debt got in the way) instead of a "pristine" (barring running on 5cyl and having shafted suspension) 320 tourer for a grand, I would of bought a 90 or 110 as for dogs/mountain bikes/DIY runs it would of been far better.

Only issue really was stupid insurance quotes, and the fact that steelworks corrodes most cars reasonably well, a LR would last about 10minutes before I'd be putting a new chassis on it.

Would love to buy 1 brand new, as drove 1 of the transit engined variety on a 4x4 day and preferred the "civillised nature" of it compared to previous D reg versions Id been in

Insurance is steep - we were quite shocked. I think it's because they get nicked a lot.

If you Waxoyl them properly, they last ages. Even new ones from the factory often have some rust so you need to keep on top of it but I've checked our (57 reg TDCi version) and nothing is at all worrying - just a few bolts that needed sorting and that's about it - the Waxoyl sorts everything else out.

TDCi version is definitely more civilized - still hardly a luxury 4x4 (!!) but that 6th gear, extra bit of torque and the nicer dash all help it feel a bit more useable than a Td5. It also has "proper" rear seats - essential when you have two kids!

A few little extras on the XS version help it too - heated seats, aircon, etc.

Had it a few months and definitely hooked!

My wife took her test at 17 in her Dad's new (at the time) 90 pickup and passed first time - she loves ours too! In fact the wife's grandparents also have one (2008 90 base spec) as gran finds it easy to get in and out of (her legs are getting a bit shaky)!

haha nice, they're in the family then?

I cant make my mind-up whether to go for:

a) pick up an old 90, say C or D reg, then do a complete rebuild..... get stuck in and do plenty of the work myself, and recruit mechanic/bodyshop mates where neccessary

OR

b) get saving and in a couple of years, pick up a latest gen one, thats few years old.

One main issue is leg room as I'm 6ft7 with a 38in leg.... so some drivers seat moving would be done. Issue 2, is the insurance..... Which at 23 is twice that of a modified 200SX, and 5times that of the 3series

Feck! That is bad on insurance!! BM 335d is £460, Landy is £350 - me 35, wife 33, both clean licenses but we live in the sticks.

I'd err towards an older one - the 200 and 300TDi versions don't have an ECU so can't be fixed more easily and seem quite decent on fuel too (relatively speaking).

Newer ones are a hefty financial commitment -still fetching big money and definitely nasty to tax and insure. However they don't depreciate much (our 110 listed at £32k and we bought it at 3 years old Used Approved with 37k on the clock. It was the SAME price as our BM bought 2 years old listing at £39k with 16k miles on the clock!!!) and are definitely great for that grin factor.

In the BM, not much on the road is faster - especially in Cornwall. In the 110 not much is slower!

for a £2k landy that needed plenty of work I was quoted something like £3500 a year insurance..... even on "specialist policy" (3k annual miles, alarmed blah blah) they wanted 2500 or more.

The bimmer is 500 a year, saab 9-3 is 690 a year for me and mrs mgmrw (she actually saves me 350 per year)

200sx was a grand..

See, in lincolnshire the B roads lend themselves well to a quick diesel, or a good chassis.

I use beemer as I would a landy...... dog cart, work horse. Pootle around.

Quite fancy building a 90 from ground up

Sorry chap. Did I read that correctly? £3500 per year insurance for a £2k Landy???

I have a 1984 Series 3, 88" that is insured fully comprehensive on a restricted mileage policy (5,000 miles p.a) at an agreed value of £3,000 & it only costs £100 / year.

OP - lovely looking truck by the way thumbup Hope you get it dirty sometimes as well wink

yeah you read that right. 3points current, 3points 4years ago (then), and 22 year old, no claims in use on daily driver. Average area of Scumthorpe in Norh Lincs, driveway dumped.

In fairness, it was CIS who also told me that my deisel saab was a performence car, and couldnt quote below 2500 when the year before it was 700

Give Flux a bell. They offer very competitive rates for 4x4's.

Nice pic.

Dealt with flux for the 200SX in the end, still wern't exactly "cheap".

Me thinks (from wasting my day browsing the classifieds) that saving up 3k over summer and then sometime october buy 1 thats a runner, and switch the admiral multicar for the 320 onto it. (320 aint worth more than a grand, and tricky to sell quick, so store for summer)

Oddly if you modify it and go through Pickles (only insures modified ones) it's usually cheaper
