I've been trying to get a house renovation project near Aberdeen off the ground for some time now.

Aberdeen and surrounding area is a bit strange in that it has it's own economic micro climate. Everything costs more up here. Services and contractors are, I believe, more difficult to secure (i.e. tradesmen and contractors all seem to be busy enough).

The status of the project is that I have the drawings done, I have permission / warranty, QS has prepared the spec and BoQ and we've been out to tender. The tender list was based on recommendation from architect and QS.

So tenders come in and the lowest is approximately 1.7 times the estimate.

Now, I'm thinking that there might be contractors from other parts of the country who would welcome this kind of work and would be able to do it on a Monday / Friday basis and still come in significantly lower than the local bids.

Trouble is, I can't think how on earth I would go about finding someone.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Eric smile

Check Northern Ireland, plenty of builders looking for work and I'm sure they'd travel
