I have been in my trade for 36 years. It is getting increasingly important for me to get a CSCS card. I don't want to take a NVQ or any other qualifications, I'm 52.

I can't seem to find any info online that doesn't want me to go to colleges and pretend I'm 18. rolleyes It's ridiculous.

Yea, they are a pain, thought up be someone office based.

I'm sure if you apply for a basic one, it does something like give you a couple of years before you should be starting some sort of NVQ crap.

You should be able to get an "Experienced Worker" card http://www.cscs.uk.com/card-type/experienced-worke... which will get you on site for a year. During that year, you'd have to register on a Level 2 NVQ, which should be pretty easy to pass for an experienced hand.

As an employer, we used to get loads of funding offers to put lads through courses, so ask around for funded courses. The assessors came out to sites, usually 6 or 8 visits over a couple of months, taking an hour out each time to assess the lads work.

Good luck.

Yes, this seems the way to go. Looks like there is no way around taking a NVQ. I got this far in life, I run the business etc.. I really do not want to take any type of exam thingies....too old.

I got a CSCS card earlier in the year. Book/DVD course and 20 minute multiple-choice exam. Card is valid until 2020. Are there different types depending upon your profession?

This is what I have, the white card. I just selected occupations that where as close to what I do as possible, making sure they did not require any qualifications or where allied to another industry body.

If you look at this list http://www.cscs.uk.com/card-finder/?export-card-re...

For example, you could apply for Brick tinter or Brick restraint installer or look for others that are close to what you do!

I have 6 different occupations on my CRO card, all close enough to what I do to get me onsite and working. Most sites don't even check the detail, as long as you have the card.

First ive heard you need any kind of qualification.

We just sent our apprentice on his cscs exam. Booked it online, he turned up and passed the common sense questions and now he has a cscs card. No one asked for qualifications or anything remotely like it. We did state his occupation and thats it.

I have the gold card did a four day health and safety course years ago when they first came out.
Then it's a ten minute touch screen test every four years or so no mention of an NVQ?

This is from their website regarding the gold card...

"This card is available if you have either

achieved a Construction Related NVQ or SVQ level 3 or
you have completed an approved indentured apprenticeship (e.g.with NJCBI, BATJIC etc.) or
completed an employer sponsored apprenticeship which included the achievement of a City and Guilds of London Institute Advanced Craft Certificate.

This card is valid for five years.

All applicants must pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test. For Advanced Craft occupations you should take the Operative or the Specialist test depending what your occupation is. For Supervisory occupations you should take the Supervisors test."

It must have changed then?

It must have changed since it started then is all I can say. I do the supervisors touch screen when it needs renewing.

The profiled route could get you a gold or black card subject to experience and review if you've been managing labour for 10+ years it should be quite straight forward.

Stupid rules ,I have driven 7.5 ton lorries off and on for 30 odd years and now it seems to apply for a 7.5 lorry driving job ,I need this type of certificate.
I suppose it mainly for health and safety reasons ,even so just common sense and experience counts for nothing nowadays.
