I have been contacted by the sales department at Yell and they want to sell me some services.
One of the services they offer that I need is website building , and I can always use any Advice on how to improve my search engine rankings once the site is built, which is something else they say they will do for me.
The price I am being given for a website is £2-300 , which seems reasonable if it effective.
has anyone got any experience of using them, are they any good , or should I just use an independent?

No, the important thing is not to give them any money and get a proper website built.
Would it be fair to say that your opinion is they won't be useful with regards to Google ranking and that kind of thing either? Obviously I could be getting the full on sucker treatment but they are leading me to believe I would be getting more than just a website. To be honest I am not sure if I need or want to spend much more than a few hundred quid at the moment anyway.
I am starting to think they will be giving me the hard sell on a shiny new banner/ targeted ad campaign while they are here.
It's all a new area for me...

This part of their service is nothing more than a scam. They do nothing for you on this front. If you need a cheap, rubbish website then you must have a 15 year old neighbour or someones nephew or whoever who is capable of installing Wordpress on a £20 a year hosting package. You can choose from loads of free themes and modify them as needed. Sure it'll not be great but it will get you online and you can work from that to improve it as needs or budget dictates.
Giving £300 to Yell is just an all round s
t idea though.KFC said:

I think I want something more professional than the Wordpress /15 yr old neighbour combo though, I will go and speak to a local web design company and see what they have to offer.
As above really. Yell/Hibu websites are bad template rubbish with details and pictures changed each time. It must cost them around £30 to put together.
A £300 website will always look like a £300 website, that is to say s
t. All a Hibu site says to me is the company doesn't care, and if they don't care about that will they care about anything else?
For me you'd be better off with no site than a s
t site. Less than a grand an I'd stick to Facebook.
IIRC you sell blinds, I don't know what an average sale is but compare it to £300 and then consider you might have this website for several years. It's unreasonable for a couple of jobs money to think a website will bring you in work for three years.
The whole area is such a minefield in terms of expectation management tbh. People think they should be on page 1 of Google for a few hundred quid because they don't have any idea that moneysupermarket (for example) have 23 guys working on their SEO. It's not helped by some companies charging through the nose for nothing, we quoted a site at £3k recently, the same spec site was £15k with an agency elsewhere. That's exactly the same site and support but an extra £12k for a fancy office.

Another +1 to the above. All you'll get is a basic and fairly standard 1-a few page website. TBH if that's all you want its probably ok as this is the sort of price lots of small agencies charge but given their business model and the uncertainty of it I'd choose someone from PH to help you.
