I can claim 45p a mile for business driving through my umbrella company, but they insist on fuel receipts of at least £15 per 100 miles claimed. This equates to about 35MPG and I'm getting 40 plus for my regular trip. At present this is one trip a week so my other running around makes the total up, but if I was doing the trip every day it would be a real problem. Is the £15 per 100 miles rule normal or is it just my umbrella companies preference?

Obviously I should use a thirstier car but it's the principle I'm interested in.

surely you just wait a couple of weeks until you have done over 100 miles, and submit a fuel receipt for some time in that period?

The 45p is the maximum tax free allowance allowed by HMRC for the first 10,000 business miles. They don't care what car you drive or how fuel efficient it is.

I can't see why your umbrella company would either.

The 45p a mile isn't supposed to just cover fuel but the costs of running the car in the round.

Thanks, that explains where they get the £15/100 miles from.

It's still potentially awkward if I don't spend enough on fuel compared with my business mileage though.

HMRC just want to see evidence that you've been buying the fuel that you're claiming. It's only really when claiming back vat that they're interested. Any fuel receipts will do, get your family or mates to hand over any they don't need.

Is there a place to get free fuel then?
