Registering a UK patent - questions
Discussion
the effective date is from when you register the patent (assuming it goes through) which is why you see patent pending often on products to put others off...
you can write your own patent (I did once - for various commercial reasons it was more important to register a patent than to worry about whether it succeeded!), but I wouldn't advise it - we used Marks & Clerk, who were very good, for our other patents - cost varies according to what needs doing...
you can apply for a sort of umbrella patent initially which gives you cover across much of the world, and then later decide which countries to focus on...
one note - it is important to get a patent right (and as broad as possible) from the outset, it is far more difficult to refine it / alter it later
get good advice and do it properly if there is any commercial benefit to you...

I am looking to register a UK patent on the design of something i'm working on.
I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of how quickly this can be done and at what cost?
Can anyone with previous experience in this area point me in the direction of a good patent firm?
Hi, I'm a patent attorney.I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of how quickly this can be done and at what cost?

If you are able to convey to an attorney what the invention is, and have a few drawings/sketches, a patent application could be drafted within a few day if urgent. If very urgent, although not ideal, can be turned around in a day. Depending on the complexity and urgency, cost for UK a provisonal filing might be anwhere between £1500-£5000 plus VAT.
