Is there any way of verifying if someone was in the forces and am I able to get a reference from them?

Chap or chapess should have the Manning & Records office address for you to write to, Service number & name and you should get the usual "served from/to, trade, rank" type of response.

Ask for a reference from their last unit or try the Army Personnel Centre direct:

What unit are they saying they were in?

APC Glasgow can issue a work reference if they ask for it but its more just a summary, They can ask there Welfare Office for a reference or the ADJT of the unit.

When I left I was given a typed type of reference from my OC at the time, It was pretty much a character reference with my time under his command, thats pretty much as personal as a character reference I would imagine you could get. If its just time served clarification your after then JPA Glasgow holds the records.

Red book thing?

Mine was rubbish - missed a bunch of qualifications, an Op and a few other things.

No a white 2 page document (card or very thick paper IIRC), but was RN and I left in 1990 so it might have changed.

It was useful when I started my first civi job as a lot of the managers were ex-RN.

Edited to add....Actually while it was a white document, when I left I was given it in a blue RN crested folder with a bunch of other documents.
