I know this sort of thing gets posted every so often, but I been through pages of threads to no avail. I need a recommendation for a simple account package for a consultant limited co. I seem to remember QuickBooks being recommended before. It needs to do PAYE as well, for just one employee. Timesheet management would be a bonus.

Will you want RTI compatibility for payroll?

Any decent software should have it.

Yes - I was just checking if the OP was aware of the RTI regulations and was making sure any software purchased was compatible.

I'm suitably embarrassed smile

Spent the last 20 years running the web software company I founded, which I sold last week, and had an accountant and bookkeeper to do all this. I had my head in software rather than accounts, as we always made profit (just a case of how much), so never really got involved in payroll and the like.

They are retaining me as a consultant through a ltd company so I am having to start to learn all this smile

Yes - there's a lot of new style "on line" submission requirements floating about these days. VAT and Corporation Tax are also compulsory on line filing.

If you are using an outside accountant for the formal statutory accounts preparation then it is easier to leave the Corporation Tax on line filing to them.

But you may need to sort your company out for VAT on line filing.

We use Xero for our consultancy. We don't use the T&E (we use Harvest for that as the project tracking is better - at a cost). Once set up it is pretty easy to use and Xero are quite responsive if there are any problems.

I use crunch.co.uk, it's pretty good for this type of thing.
