The hse do a lot of very good work they have allowed workers a voice against unsafe working pactices. Manual labourers live longer, with far fewer injuries now because of the hse.

Sadly the hse has also become an excuse used by lazy types to find excuses. But if you have risk assessed something, and fined as a result of not changing then you need a quiet work with yourself before your employees do

The factory where I work has had a number of people killed over the years.

Its because of the HSE that the last was and remains some years ago.

i was on a course once to learn how to use a bit of equipment for my employer, a self propelled high platform thing. as an aside i never knew why as i was the it guy?

the guy teaching me to use it correctly was getting me up to speed on all the hse reg etc. i said, surely this is common sense.

his reply was that there is only a rule against doing something as some fking bellend has done the thing you say 'why would you?'

if i think of it that way I understand the thinking behind the rules. not sure about the charges though.

But they are paid a decent salary, and no doubt a decent pension as well, from our taxes already. These extra costs appear to be 'labour' charges not a fine.

If the HSE truly wanted to reduce accidents to a minimum they might have the nous to inform all businesses of legislative changes. Or of course they could keep them in the dark, then charge them £124/hour when the business falls over the new red tape.

I am lead to believe from a number of ex HSE inspectors that they were being targeted on revenue generation which would somewhat detract for their initial and laudable task of accident reduction as rightly mentioned by Williamp.

They will also charge you on the FFI basis to research your trade to then advise you on any areas of non compliance.

Equally though I still see a number of business that still have not even complied or attempted co comply with the old six pack as it was referred to being the early 1990s safety legislation let alone the current regulations.

Bingo.

Pay once for something, then pay again when you need it.

I have a Woodworking Plant too. HSE spot check in 2013 (basically every 4 years).

The Inspector noted I was using the incorrect masks in my spray booths. Asked me to research new ones and a face-fitting company. Also an occupational health company for testing my sprayers lungs on a regular basis. Emailed correspondence and wished me and my family all the best.

No Charge.

OP should keep a record of this visit for future Insurance claims against him. Effectively a clean bill of health except in one area which has been quickly rectified.

Engage Consultants and see what Dick Turpin really looks like.

Its easy this, new charges in place to fund the countrys shortfall, if they visit and find 1 thing wrong they will charge you the new hourly rate of £124 per hour followed by additional charges until findings rectified. Expect the same from the Environmental Agency and any other government bodies from now on.

That said it will drive on the safety of all employees in our country.

Nothing to see here biggrin

Was meant as a heads up for unclear charges having to be paid for an HSE visit if they find a problem. Nothing more nothing less and nothing to do with attacking the good work the HSE do.

Some obviously think (or just feel they have to make pointless replies) there are other agendas here so I just thought in the end it best to delete it and leave it at that.

Wozy - with respect , I don't think there were agenda issue with any of the posters , simply like yourself just to advise of the associated issues around this subject.

From a fellow Porsche owner in the Vale - kind regards

OP, could be worse.

This bloke was fined £2.5K but the HSE 'intervention costs' came to £18000!

and there are plenty of proper safety consultancies who will charge rather less than 124 gbp/hr to do audits and training ...

the problem is that there are people who were shunted into (in house) none jobs as H+S on the basis of a NEBOSH General whose adenodial semantic-pragmatic disorder driven emissions mean people think H+S is a joke ...

dependant on your industry you can insure against Fees for Intervention as part of your legal expenses cover.

you may have it without even knowing.

I have a feeling that this only in the event of a liability claim and not as a stand alone head of claim but happy to be corrected.

Would have been a breach of one of the fundamental principles of insurance of not being able to insure against fines and punitive charges I think.
