I was visiting a mates CCTV / Alarm / Elec distributors and saw this

He had over 500 of them in screw and bayonet and I thought that the bulb in a table lamp would be a great product for my Mrs (loves spoken ebooks and hates headphones).

You know you have a "price in your head" for stuff well it was much more than the £8 + vat he wanted for them, I thought an easy £19.99 sell out and envisaged a nice few weeks of sales on eBay until I searched ebay to see them at £14.99 delivered - £9.60 + 10% ebay fee = £10.56 + 2% paypal + £2.65 post and packing (not signed for) = £13.25 approx

What a great product but no profit potential whatsoever, no matter what it is or how good the concept things are just given away these days.

Not great business but I still want one.

I wonder if you could buy a few and have them all working at the same time?

Yep they had managed to pair a Samsung with 3 of them but I am not sure a iPhone would - what a superb idea though and he is getting a ceiling spot version in soon as well, its far far from hifi (!) but for muzak or podcasts its superb.

Note if buying on eBay from the many many sellers they do 3w and 6w plus colour changing or white plus screw or bayonet.

Not in the same league but at work we have a few hundred grab rails and people on Ebay are selling them at less than it would cost us to post them and we get quite a good post price!

Plus the fees are on the selling price, so take off another 50p. Plus 15p to pack it.....

No not RM, the main importer has about 10k inc all variations so my mates 500 may not have got the best price do in theory perhaps another 50p is in there. They were sold for £18 to £20 up till September but I don't think they sold fast enough. Set up tonight and works a treat.

But the point remains eBay just kills these things off. This is why I hate my job these days. Years ago I wasn't up against eBay outfits who sell out for nothing (to fold down the line but Joe Public doesn't care about that!!). Whenever we find something new it sells well for about 6 months then eBay is full of it for next to nothing.

That reason and the never ending hoops to jump through are the reasons I sold up.

No it still can be but not in the current view you have, you possibly like me are a buy it - advertise it - sell it type person who wants to make a modest nett, like me you are amazed and saddened by how easy tiny sellers can get stock and sell it for less than it costs and at the end of the day the importers / manufacturers seem to have lost control of the channels.
However ultra niche markets exist I am aware of a 5 month old business that explores several niche markets with one simple product (customised) that has gone from zero to 300+ a day with a decent margin and no adwords its mainly sold via social media.
My new business will deliver information only initially and may branch out into hard stock after I understand the new ways of online selling in depth.

Keep us posted! I am disillusioned with it all at the moment. I suppose I should use the latest Google shafting to take time away & look at new things but I just can't be bothered right now. (amazing how the Adword vouchers keep arriving in my email, I wouldn't give them the steam off my piss let alone money).
