Lately I have been feeling really angry at the government & Co regarding the unfair and quite frankly discriminatory treatment against small business owners.

Time and time again we hear about how larger businesses/corporations are paying little to no CT for UK sales and God knows what else they are fudging yet any little incentives or perks small business owners have seem to be quickly being removed.

If anything do we not deserve more help.
Being VAT registered, paying CT and all sorts of other taxes is just a complete con.

Living wage is really going to hit a lot of sectors hard.

CT is going to be slashed to 12.5% in N.I.

By 2025 it will be the new Hong Kong.

It is interesting you mention that, I do see quite a lot from other countries in terms of incentives to set up businesses in those locations, but its a simple case of the UK gov over coming this by implementing the new rule of UK Tax being paid on sales of the end customers location and not the location of the Company.

Its getting very frustrating. I am going to seriously have to start looking into legal set ups that will allow me to grow in the future.

Netflix is the latest tax avoider apparently.

Reported as £200M in sales in the UK, £0 corporation tax.

far easier for the Government to take an extra 7.5% tax from small business owners.

Hi Purplemoodlight,

I seen that! to say that it made me angry would be an understatement.
Larger companies seem to get away with murder because, well they can!
The Gov seem to push around the smaller guys because they can!

Just find it very unfair!

Was there ever a period where people haven't been angry with "the government"?

Do they have any centre of operations in the UK?

Tax is not paid on sales. It is paid on profits.

Time and time again we see these claims, mainly from people with vested interests who don't have a clue what they are talking about!

Provided only for the figures, not a commentary:

"Figures obtained by The Sunday Times showed that its Dutch arm - Netflix International BV - had a net turnover of £415million and profits of £11.3million.

British customers, who typically pay £5.99 a month for the service are given contracts from Netflix BV. "

I think your anger is misplaced. The UK isn't a great place for big business, I don't know exactly why or if there's just one reason. It could be the currency, it could be the tax system or it could be the availability of people, but we in the UK don't get big business in the same way as e.g. the US does.

What the Government's more bothered about is jobs for people. While we have decent money flowing we don't have big businesses in a truly large corporate way. We have a few in the City, but elsewhere it's just small time stuff that might employ 5-250 people. That's small business and they don't employ an awful lot of people.

The biggest employer for miles around here is the NHS. Behind that is the local Uni. Behind that is the county council. There's no large employers around here that aren't public sector, and the Gov in some ways needs there to be. So they cut breaks for new big businesses coming in to the country and the fkers all want to be in London/SE. So London becomes more and more isolated from the reality of the rest of the country. As in say, Leicester. Or Leeds.

Being angry at big corporates doesn't make any sense, because they're working the breaks given to them. Being angry at the Government gives you a 3 way choice of 1. suck it up 2. move to the EU or 3 do something else.

They are larger in the US because they have 10 times the population we have. I was in NZ a while back and the average business has 4-5 people.

Err, that is very far from the reality. The NHS in total employs about 1.3 million, UK SMEs employ 16 million, the rest of the private sector employs about 10 million.

If you cared to examine the figures for somewhere like Leeds you will find only approx 30% of the workforce are employed by the "Public admin, education and health" sector.

I wonder how many people Netflix employs in the UK to suck £200M out of our economy?

I'm a small business owner and feel increasingly squeezed by changes in this governments policies. It's almost as if they think people set up a business for the benefit of paying them tax.

I'm seriously thinking about taking my business abroad as a result.

I never expected to be put in this position by a conservative government.

That's the reality around here if you're looking at who the biggest employers are. Not how many little employers who employ more people.

I once sized up a datacenter project for a customer, we were only doing the basic connectivity. I can't remember how much square foot it was, but lets say the building was 50k sq foot new build onto some land they'd bought.

The local council guy comes round and says oh wow, with 50k sq foot you must be creating about 150 new jobs, this is great! When he found out it'd be 4 guys looking at data from racks and racks of servers his face dropped. The building size in the councils mind tied to an amount of jobs that would be needed to run it as it it were a factory or an office. Couldn't get his head around it that only 2 people were needed with another 2 on shift

That is exactly my postion.
Not sure what industry your in but I think it would be very very difficult for me as I buy and sell goods.

It might be a case of concentrating on international business and set up elsewhere.

When I think about my sales and the amount of "tax" in one or another that I need to worry about paying out is just a joke.

I have friends who own small business and they seem to get away with paying a lot less tax compared to their earning than I do..

Should I be p1ssed off with small businesses or the government?
