We're looking at purchasing some new machinery. We've got contacts who can move machines up to around 2 tons but this item would be 4 tons, 3m long, 2m wide and 1.5m high. It would need to be a company that has experience of rigging and moving precision machinery and we'd need both load and unload so it's either a big HIAB or we'd look to crane hire at delivery point.

Does anyone have contacts with experience/expertise in this area? Distance would be Manchester to Dover, good access both ends with a slightly awkward offload (although a drop onto skates may work for us).

Thanks.

I've used " Flegg's Transport" a few times to move large lathes, always been very impressed. I remember seeing a YouTube video a while ago of them moving a hospital scanner so presume they ok with delicate equipment.

This company is used by Mazak to deliver and install their machines, a very good set up!

Only from a drivers point of view from seeing some of their specialist kit on my travels, but it was Russells and Fleggs that sprung to my mind.

We did, a couple of years ago, get a cheaper company to move a couple of old machines for us.. absolute cowboys!

Finch of Bookham. Probably the best in the business, but probably not the cheapest. They have been around for decades.

Used to move a lot of dry cleaning equipment about for a company we worked for (and still do I believe)

I've had bad experiences now with a couple of "professionals"; the guy and his son who turned up to move an 800kg bandsaw with a rented transit and no lifting equipment. The company who arrived with a 2 ton milling machine not tarped, parked it outside the local pub overnight and then "remembered" that they were supposed to bring a forklift and could I find one within 2 hours.

The absolute worse (and most expensive) was a Shiply farce involving 2 different companies, a HIAB off lift onto a pallet (they supplied) which then cracked with the weight of the machine which promptly fell over shearing off the dovetail castings on the knee. The "goods in transit" insurance didn't cover it and I ended up swallowing a 1.5k loss. Pulled a few bits out of the machine for scrap to mitigate some of that loss but it's left me very guarded about getting stuff moved.

Another vote for Fleggs. We have used them for CNC transport before.

What part of the country are you in - Fleggs and Charles Russell are pretty good but know how to charge as well. I know quite a lot smaller independant guys who've been moving machines for 20/30 years but being owner operators types tend to be a few hundred pound cheaper than the big boys but do just as good a job

I'm in Dover, candidate machines are in Manchester, Swadlincote - basically up North

If it was my job i'd arrange a 40' flat lorry (make sure the driver knows how to sheet) and arrange Jack Nobbs to load and secure the Manchester machine
http://www.jacknobbsmachinery.co.uk
Down to Swadlincote and get Leicester Machine Movers to load and secure there (they are only 20miles down the road (http://www.leicestermachinemovers.co.uk/) and then get Kent Machinery to do the offload and re-siting at your end (http://www.kentms.com/)

All three I use every year (I move about 600 machines a year using LMM a lot as they are local to me) all three are insured and can do a decent job for you.
