Looking for a decent SMS Gateway. Not for advertising but for implementing two factor authentication. Preferably one which has a Java api.

We use Twilio for 2FA in a Java app. Easy and not expensive. You can free trial it too.

I've been using Twilio for a few years now, fully recommend it.

Something you may have already thought about, but offer a second option other than SMS at each login, just in case the user is in an area of poor reception.

There is also https://www.nexmo.com/

Better yet for 2 factor authentication check out the following rather than rolling your own:

Twilio are very good if your looking to roll your own solution.

We've recently switched over to Azure Active Directory B2C 2FA is basically 2p per authentication and the system is OpenID connect based so very simple to integrate.

I wouldn't spend time building anything on top of OpenID. Most people have moved away from it preferring OAuth.

Unless you know what you're doing I'd always advise using someone else's implementation. It isn't as straight forward as generating a random code and sending it via SMS.
