How would it work?

Even though self employed, I guess the case could be made that they are really employees?

Surely they're self-employed subcontractors? Do PimPlumb pay them a fixed wage regardless of work carried out?

IR35 only applies to "intermediaries" i.e. limited companies, partnerships or other more complicated set ups, such as trusts.

If an individual is working for you in a "self employed" capacity, he has no worries over IR35. However, YOU might have to consider whether he is truly self employed because if HMRC decides that he isn't and should really be treated as an employee of your business, it is YOU they will chase for any underpaid PAYE or NI.

If the financial services industry laid out all its charges in a neat little table what would we find I wonder?!

Which bit?
Hedge funds? 2 & 20.
IPO underwriters? c.5%
Trading? 10-15bps.

Sure it is nice and transparent at PP but it seems damn expensive compared to say a Junior Barrister on £100 an hour.

Im putting my prices up.

How on earth does this company still trade? people are mugs if they are paying this kind of rate.

Ive heard from a reliable source that Pimlico plumbers operate on the basis that no job only takes one hour, staff are told to aim for a minimum of 2hrs.

That's because your quoting about twice the going rate for the two I've left above (not aufae enough with HF's to comment specifically)

Out of interest, what kind of experience have you had with them where they've ripped you off?

Roughly 1.5-2x on the HFs too! (I am au fait with them and the others, but don't want to encourage the race to the bottom!!) wink

I like the light up on call signs on top of their vans.
Does this make them immune to parking tickets? If so can I have one too as I need access to my van for tools and materials too.

For a fairly reasonable amount you can insure your heating, plumbing, drainage and so on with British Gas. Used them a couple times over the years. Why pay high hourly rates?

Whilst clearly Charlie is clearly making some good money it's not as outrageous as some would make out.
£40 of that £240 is VAT so not much the company can do about that. Then you're looking at £200 per hour for a plumber between midnight and 7AM and in London.
Clearly these are pretty well skilled tradesmen and unusually also have a certain amount of social/customer facing skill.
I own and run this type of company and believe me, even finding tradesmen of the required standard is a massive issue and if you can find them then you have to pay them appropriately.

Look at the day rates and the prices don't seem too bad (for London).
Don't compare the hourly rates with what you might earn as an employee. I frequently hear customers say they'd only have to work an hour a day if they earned what we charged. So would I (well, almost), except I have to pay office staff, premises, vehicles, insurance, marketing, holiday/sick pay, banking and so on out of the rates we charge.

I dont think you are their customer base.

The majority Pimlico's customer base will be high class/high earners who are after top level service and are willing to pay for this.

I dont think you will get the same level of service from british gas.......

As an IT Contractor caught by IR35 (18 years with the same client co) then Pimlico Plumbers have got to be disguised employment.

It's the old 'are they (the individual plumbers) in business on their own right?' argument that HMRC look at.

Clearly not, if they only work for Pimlico/drive one of their vans/wear the uniform/don't work for anyone else.

With regards to their Homecare 100 or 200 I think it's pretty good. £18pcm covers all my central heating. In my previous house the boiler was about 25 years old and towards the end I was calling them out at least once a year. Quick, reliable, usually fixed first time, and you're not worried about a £100 job suddenly turning into a £250 job.

IR35 will only apply if the individual plumbers are operating through their own intermediary (ltd co, partnership etc). If they are acting as if they are purely "self employed", then any underpaid PAYE or NI will be payable by Pimlico.

What makes their service so exceptional.

Has anyone here direct experience of them?
