Can I use the AA route planner to work out my business mileage allowance? and do I need to reference it as the source?
Also can I round up to the nearest mile or do tenths of miles need to be taken into account?
I do numerous trips to the same locations, so I can easily work out total mileage for the tax year.
Thanks smile

somebody may come and tell you you need to do it to the letter but if it's an accurate calculation then I don't see why it should be taken as being less reliable than your car's mileometer. If you end up with more mileage than your car has done miles then that's obviously a problem though.

I am a bit revolutionary here. I usually take a pen or sometimes a pencil and actually record the mileage.

As speedos over-read by a few percent, and are linked to the odometer, do odometers over-record miles?

I use Google Maps to give mileage quotes.

I haven't bothered to record them over the last years as it's too much hassle...and not been needed. This tax year i've earn't a bit more than expected so need to account for my expenses to avoid any likely NI contributions . Still not too sure what that limit is but I'm still way below the income tax allowance.

Current limit is first 10,000 miles at 45p per mile. 20p per mile thereafter

You misunderstand, what I meant was I might have made £6000 income this year and I need to account for my petrol expenses to reduce this to below the NI contributions limit ( which I think might be about £5800).

I use AA Route Finder for precisely this reasons. Much easier to total up my trips for the week based on my appointment diary and add them to my spreadsheet than to remember to record mileage every trip.

The way I see it, someone would have to be digging pretty seriously into your affairs to start to split hairs over AA-Route Finder vs recording the actual mileage to the 0.1 of a mile. If they have reason to be looking under this stone chances are things are going to be getting much worse for you in other areas.

My employer used AA Routeplanner to calculate mileage and time payments for a recent relocation I was involved in. One thing we found was that it often shows a different time and mileage for a journey from "B" to "A" than for "A" to "B" over the same route.

Probably because you'll do things like go the longer 3/4 of a roundabout, longer slip roads off motorways, going one way rather than the other...?

That's what we thought, but if it's 'that' accurate it should be fine for the OPs requirements. I submitted the version of the journey that gave the most mileage for my relocation claim...

I use Google Maps to give mileage quotes.
They are seperate. The displayed speed and the recorded speed on the odometer are different.

I've used Google Route planning for years without an issue.
