We seem to be having plenty of challenging customer at the moment...perhaps the warmer weather bring them out!
What's been your worst?
We had one a while ago...placed an order online at about 11.30pm on a Sunday night. Phoned me up at 8.05am the following day to moan that nothing had been delivered to him in the post that morning and accused us of stealing from him and saying he would get the police involved. Couldn't reason with him at all. I then received a phone call from the same number that he phoned from, with a guy who had the same sounding voice, saying he was the police and that by law we had to refund him the purchase price, supply him with what he bought and give him £200 compensation!! I asked for his badge number and the phone number of the local police station and all of a sudden he couldn't hear anything down the telephone.....and then the original guy phoned to complain again. To top it all he then wrote a handwritten letter with the words "The Police" at the top saying we were going to be arrested!
What is up with some people?!?

Brilliant!
We do get the odd customer who orders something on a Sunday and then rings Monday asking where it is.
Stock answer is "Can we process the order first before you start chasing it?"

Must admit nothing as strange as pretending to be the police.

I'm afraid I have nothing really to add that wouldn't knacker my client's confidentiality in some way.

But I wish that had happened to me. That's priceless! You'd not be short of a story again!

A scan of that letter posted on Social Media with the story sounds like a brilliant way to get some viral marketing going. Start here.

Nothing is going to top that story OP!

Had a bloke turn up at the office many years ago about a dispute we'd been having, he basically told me he was going to take his credit card to our terminal & process the refund himself. I explained that this wasn't going to happen, feeling very aware that he had chosen to arrive when I happened to be on my own in the building.

Thats brilliant. Forward the letter to the police saying you don't think its very professional that they send letters for civil matters smile

Surely he could be done for impersonating a Police Officer if you bring the letter to a police station. Would be worth refunding his money and telling him where to go just to do it smile

I've got a vague pipe dream of setting up an online widget sales business from home (subject to deciding on a reasonably profitable widget) but it is the dealing with cockwombles like this that I find a little offputting!

Like the stupid cow who left us negative feedback on eBay - she gave the wrong delivery address so her item wasn't delivered - we then shipped a replacement free of charge & she still wasn't happy FFS! Or the multitude of muppets that purchase then refuse to pay, stating that their child had bought it by mistake - who lets their kids have access to things like eBay accounts?!!

Had a few over the years. One that stands out was when we had designed and printed a nice catalogue of properties for a high-end estate agent. The guy bhed about the blue colour on the cover. They spent quite a bit with us but this was the first time we had dealt with this particular chap and we ended up re-printing it four times, despite there really being nothing wrong with it. It was on the delivery of the last batch that he revealed he was colour blind.

I work for a company that put plants in people's offices. At my current firm I do a bit of everything, but at the last place in London they had a separate sales force, very commission based.

One had sold a client a very expensive, but inappropriate plant for his office. So our mess up, admittedly.

So it kept dying, so I had to go and see him to persuade him to have a substitute replacement species.

He flatly refused this, but insisted that I put in a plant that would not die, despite being the same.

I replied that if I put the same species in again it would last a few months looking a bit sick, then die.

This was not good enough, and we reached an impasse, but rather than find a compromise he just kept me in this meeting, trying to get his own way in an increasingly arsy way, for about another half an hour, until I just upped and left. It didn't help that he was really camp and sneery.

In the end we cancelled his contract unilaterally, a unique occurrence!

Exactly. The police might be interested that somone is pretending to be the police to get compensation out of people.

I echo the "order on sat or sunday and the phone call or the email on monday" We find the worst one are orders from overseas, they can be very demanding on shipping times and will open a paypal dispute at the drop of hat.

We had a slightly different one this week

Young johnny rings up to ask what Engine oil goes in his Kawasaki KX60, the girl who answered the phone is very clued up on these matters and so is all the staff.

"do you mean gearbox oil"
No engine oil

"do you mean 2 stroke oil you mix with the fuel"

No engine oil

" you mean gear oil"

No i have that i want engine oil
" there is no oil for the engine only gear oil or premix oil for the tank"

Can i speak to a man please !

She passes him on to one of the lads who repeat the sarga, he gets agitated and passe the phone to a woman, the woman is a member of staff in halfords trying to help this lad buy "engine oil"

I used to develop software for Palm PDAs, while they were still running Palm OS. One of the key features of Palm OS is that it is (or was, I think the unreleased V6 was supposed to address it) a single-tasking OS, only runs one program (they weren't called apps, then) at a time, but a design suggestion is that you start quickly, and retain state when closing so it gives the appearance of multi-tasking. A chap bought a copy of our software and complained it stopped working when he switched to his navigation system, and was not mollified when we explained the operating system simply does not allow more than one program at a time, it isn't possible to write our code to make the OS multi-task. "You must work harder", was one of the reasonable replies from him.

From that point, the web site was expanded with more and more reiterations of how Palm OS is single-tasking and our application cannot run at the same time as anything else. And yet still we'd get emails asking when we planned to "fix" that, or asking whether it would run at the same time as a specific navigation package, usually starting with "I've read all the info on the web site, could you just clarify....". So, "I've read where you said it's not possible, but presumably you don't mean that?"

Just now;

  • emailed order conf8irming the diameter of part at 40mm
  • we send 40mm dia. part
  • customer phone up to say it's the wrong size; should be 35mm
Okay then... Clearly this is more complicated than we first though. Do we simply deduct 5mm from any measurement given, or is this a -12.5% based code we are working to?

Q: What B.S.tolerance is +0 /-5 ?

A: In engineering parlance it's a "wk through an open window".
