I have recently left a big firm and am striking out on my own as a consultant. I know I need a website so that potential customers can look me up prior to meetings etc but don't really know where to start - i guess a bit about me, the services I offer, some background etc? Is there an idiots guide? I don't know how much a professional website design costs but it is presumably a lot more than I can afford! I was thinking of putting something together on a site like Go Daddy and then have someone "polish" it for, hopefully, not too much or does that not make sense? All thoughts and suggestions welcome and thanks in advance.

I would steer clear of Godaddy.

You can get a small hosting package for $35 a year with these guys https://asmallorange.com/

I would look to build a basic site in Wordpress which you can automatically install from the backend (cpanel) of the above hosting company.

What do you need to display? Is LinkedIn sufficient for now or do you need to display your own work etc?

As above. Just work on your linkedin profile for now, pay for it if necessary to get some bits that might not be on free version (don't know what these are) and get a website when you've got some money together to pay for good design. Of course, by then, your linkedin profile may be all you need.

A cheap website will not help you out. It will hinder you.

GoDaddy - No!!!

Or any of the TV advertised webiste for £4.99 a month.

Wordpress template best option with a decent reliable host, circa £40 per annum with domain name.

LinkedIn profile very important

Echo the comments above about steering clear of GoDaddy.

If I was you I'd buy the domain names, but just forward them on to a well prepared LinkedIn page.

If you definitely need something more than that, go with either SquareSpace or Wordpress.

What do you need a website for?

I'm not saying you dont need one, but what's it's use? A showcase for your IT and design skills? An up to date CV? A 'here's what I've done and some testimonials'

When I started out on my won, the first 6-12 months was referral business, they didnt care that I used my Gmail account to send invoices, some of them set me up an email address on their mail server anyway so i was included in discussions.

You have to figure out whether what you're going to spend time and money on is actually going to be any kind of benefit to you

So don't pay £4.99 a month but pay £40PA?! If you need a reliable host look at TSO host/Vidahost. In my experience you won't find better.

£4.99 pcm for a st site with little upgrade potential.

£40 per annum for a domain u own and hosting you have decent control over with potential for a decent WP template woth infinite upgrade potential
