I started a business a few years ago and put the website together using Weebly (because it was very user friendly) and relevant SEO where possible.

It managed to get onto p2 of google, was rising and was getting organic hits to go along with the adwords.

Maybe 12 months later we ported it over to Wordpress using an outside resource and we're now no.1 on google but have lost control over the content and the look of the site which we'd like to update ourselves.

We're thinking of setting out our new site on Weebly again with fresher content and then pointing the url back at the weekly site rather than wordpress.

Question is, will this impact our google ranking significantly even if we add relevant SEO where possible on Weebly?

Surely it would be simpler to update the Wordpress site - it's not difficult for content

What's the reason you've lost control over the content on your Wordpress site? Any competent web developer should be able to set up WP in the back end so it's very simple for users to update content themselves.

Has the old developer locked you out the site and went missing or refused to give you access? If you want to PM me the URL I can tell you if it will be pretty easy to get everything back under your control.

bigbox, you can make wordpress look like anythng you want to. there are no limitations I have come across personally.

just go to the theme section, and find the closest to what you want, then start playing with it. basic CSS + HTML, which is incredibly easy to pick up will have you with exactly what you want.

Ok thanks for your replies which are appreciated. We don't have any issues with ththe web developer, it's more a case off getting control for change and ongoing tweaks back into our hands. This is a small business which we're working on in our spare time and neither of us are well versed in web languages but found weebly very easy to use.
I'd like to reformat and modernise the site as and when I have time, probably using one of the newer weebly templates hence the question on the impact on Google...

As other have said Wordpress is a far better solution and can look any way you want. It may be worth taking one day course for less than £100 to get you fully trained up and not having to rely on anyone.

to answer your question: if you go back back to weebly as it was then, your google ranking will revent back down, unless there have been other changes, such as referrals to your site etc.

SEO, or getting to the top of google is The most important part of any commercial website. Nothing else comes close. Having a great site is useless if no-one sees it.

Sounds like you just want to change the theme of your wordpress site. You don't need technical knowledge to do this, it is incredibly easy.

The Wordpress theme is the equvalent of a weebly template. Usually when you change it there's some tidying up to do afterwards to get everything how you want it.

There should be no issue with you logging into the Wordpress to make tweaks and additions yourself, speak to the developer about it.

If you're #1 on Google at the moment then I'd handle any big changes quite carefully and with advice.

Retain WordPress.

Get a new design completed, convert it into Wordpress.

Ask for a tutorial on how to update it

For SEO reasons I'd retain Wordpress, but I can totally understand why you might want to go back to Weebly. As a managed system Weebly has ease of use built-in. Wordpress is also fairly easy but there are times when it can be a pain!

Yeah but these days when you come across something your struggling with on WP you can hire an 'expert' to sort it for $5!
