I can't get hold of my web guy, but my website is saying it needs updating to wordpress 4.7.

As I am not clued up on this, is it safe to just click the update?

I am seeing this when I sign in to edit some content.

Thanks

Usually yes, some plugins might have a hissy but unlikely.

Can probably wait 24hrs if it is routinely patched as part of your maintenance - eg you aren't missing loads of security patches.

Usually ok; but they do advise a backup before doing it.

As an aside; the new Wordpress has had a couple security issues; fixed already I'm sure; but if you haven't already, install 'Wordfence' - the free version installed does a good enough job... and never have your username as 'Admin' or anything obvious; I found out the hard way.

The themes are what to watch out for.. when updating. If you are using a theme that needs updating; an update will cancel any customisations that have been made... that's where 'child' themes come in (another story). Plugins should all be updated without issue.

If you do have a web guy; maybe wait until he can sort!

^^ THIS!

Why do you need to do it so urgently? Unless your web guy is on a round the world cruise, 100% wait.

Thanks.

It wasn't anything urgent, I just saw it and thought I'd do it if it was easy enough.

4.7 has only been out a few days, I'd wait. I did apply this update on an unimportant site and it broke the admin page due to an incompatibility with a cache plugin.

Also it really depends what version you're upgrading from. Going from 4.6 to 4.7 will probably not present any issues. Upgrading from 3.1 almost certainly will! hehe
