Only have a few staff most of which have been with me for a long time. Now have a vacancy. Employers cant go in to a job canter any longer and I dont want to spend a shed load with agencies. Advice please.

Very relevant question!

Without more details, and assuming it's a job for local people, a card in the window of the local Co-Op or similar could do the trick, along with an advert in the local free press sits vac. Put a banner ad on your corporate website home page. Offer existing staff a modest but welcome thank-you if they introduce the successful applicant.

Then again if it's for the FD of a large ltd co then the above won't apply smile

Back when hiring for coffee shop staff/summer leisure workers I found that gumtree was pretty good - free too!

^^ Why not mention this here then?

Anyway, Gumtree would be a good shout or something like www.indeed.co.uk

If you are looking for 'professional' type staff, try Linked In

laugh Quite. The OP has asked the question in his OP, why does he need to drop you an email to say the same thing? laugh

oh bugger off!!
i'm trying to be nice and you re picking apart the way in which I've tried to be nice
clearly I need more details about the job he's looking to fill in order to give proper advice. The OP may not want to share these details on a public forum.

So they can 'touch base'? or whatever recruiters currently like to use.

Last time we recruited someone we just posted on Facebook and Twitter. Got friends and family to share and the person who sent in the CV of the eventual person we took on got £1K. Lot cheaper than a recruitment company and we got CV's a lot more in line with the job on offer.

Thanks for the replies.
I have a mobility shop In Somerset. I need someone who can both sell anything from incontinence pads to chairs to scooters but also has to be able to service and repair stuff. On top of that all the jobs that are expected of anyone that works in a small business. They need no previous as we can and will train them.
I have spent all week trying to register and do the gov.uk thing, at least a dozen phone calls and hundreds of e-mails, it is almost impossible and to say the staff in Exeter where I have had to phone are disinterested would be a massive overstatement.

If you have a shop front, why not advertise in it?

As a small business I would do an online ad, REED etc for £150 as a last resort. I would never use an agency.

Word of mouth, facebook post or similar would be best IMO!

Well so far we've had replies from a Recruitment Consultant with 12 years experience and a Recruitment Consultant with 20 years experience so I'll trump that with being a recruitment consultant with 24 years experience...(any advance on that smile??? ! But no I'm definitely not after the business (not my market sector) , all I was going to say was try www.reed.co.uk -they'll do an intro advert for just £79. For this sort of vacancy its probably the best job board and I reckon you'll get plenty of replies/applicants to choose between.

Thank you monoloco, exactly the sort of advice I was hoping for. Seen their add on telly but as I was not looking for a job the penny had not dropped that I could advertise with them.
