Having seen something in my house which I just didnt like I tried to find something similar to what is in my head and cant find anything.

How would I go about going from my idea to an item which could be sold/produced?

Without trying to give the game away it would be made of wood and incorporate electrics while still working how the original product worked prior to the electrics being added. It would takes the likes of ikea or another large furniture place to take it up as I doubt it would work in small numbers.

Is it just a case of try and build one myself then go from there?

There have been loads of threads on prototyping new products/concepts, so it could probably be useful to do a search to see how others have approached it.

yes And if you can't make one, try to find someone who could.

build a prototype
secure the IP (patent / design protection / trademarks / etc.)
fully sort out a business plan including how you are going to make / sell / scale / etc.
have some initial ones made
walk around retailers / sell them online / sell at fairs / depending on product

finance it all yourself...

Also OP, remember that your version of whatever it is might infringe someone's patent.

If you live near a large library which features a BIPC section/department, apparently you can get patent searches done for £30.
