I'm starting to do some work with US clients and so far they have done wire transfers to our UK business bank account with a GBP conversion. Some prefer fixed costs in USD and with the current FX that could actually work in my favour. What's the best way of collecting on USD invoices without a UK USD account ?

Anone use Payoneer ? On the face of it seems quite a neat interface but need to assure myself its secure and money won't end up in limbo or have a ton of hidden fees.

lots of options, but if you work for them in sterling then you can bill them in sterling and if they decide to pay in $ then they take the exhange hit: you should get the correct amount regardless of what they actually pay. Its not as convenient for them, but you should see the correct amount in sterling in the account.

If you buy and spend in $ then it might be worth getting a currency account, as you'll only see the exchange rate hit once YOU convert it to sterling. Most banks business accounts offer currency accounts and the ability to move money between them using online/phone/app

Why not open a U.K. Based USD account? Most banks will let you do so.

When I did the same I simply billed in USD and I would receive a cheque. Paid into Sterling bank account with an ex fee which was quite reasonable.

This numerous times. I don't like to p1ss off the client over admin so a small ex fee is nothing to ease the process and never had a problem

My bank allows me to 'buy' forex for market rate and transfer direct to a forex currency. Same should be available inbound. So, bill client in USD, they transfer that amount of USD that ends up in GBP in your account.

Contact me by PM if you like, we offer hedging facilities and USD holding accounts for customers in the UK. Can then transfer when you like into GBP at our rate and not the bank rate.
