Drone Business?
Discussion
Anyone here using drones, or interested in using drones in their business?
There's a lot of potential, from film sets to building sites, surveying to wedding photos. The tools are getting better, but there's still quite a hobbyist feel to a lot of the market - if you're a QS trying to improve site management, you don't really want to be building your own flying robot - they're meant to save time and money, not add another distraction.
I sell tools for reporting, management and media analysis on one of the better known names in the industry (no, not that one). Interested to hear if anyone out there is working in this space?

There's a lot of players in this market already. I wouldn't say it's become a 'mature' market but pretty established so the ability to break into it today is less easy and more risky than a few years ago. Added to which there is an increasing amount of 'idiot-proof' kit out there for not a lot of money aimed at those with one-off or occasional need.
I'm currently working on a project in north Cyprus and had need to hire a drone cam company to film a landfill site. I was amazed at how many there were in Turkey and on the Island itself - good ones too, very good in fact.
As mentioned, there is existing legislation on drone operation that you need to be aware of. This is already quite stringent but likely to become more so in the future.
As with any business though, if you can do something better, for less money...or something more, for the same money, then go for it!

Personally, I'm not offering piloting services, though I've been flying drones for a couple of years. As I said, my company develops tools for drone pilots, so I was interested to see if any of the PH membership is exploring this area.I'm currently working on a project in north Cyprus and had need to hire a drone cam company to film a landfill site. The 'man with a drone' market is pretty difficult right now, especially as the barrier to entry is so low (if you don't mind an untrained operator with no license). It's very much a case of you get what you pay for though and I've heard some pretty bad stories.
Perhaps the more interesting stuff is happening with surveying, inspection, photogrammetry, search and rescue and other novel uses.
I've just finished building www.dtecgroup.com for a client - they do this kind of stuff, focussing on training with a bit of sales on the side.
