Ok, we are about to take delivery of a new pool car, we've never done this before so i was thinking about how the employees pays for fuel on it. So, how do fuel cards work, are they cheaper or more expensive? Any downsides? I figured i can leave it in the car and then who ever is out in it can then use the fuel card to refuel it when needed.

Is there a better way or are there any pro's and con's for a company fuel card?

thanks

I would never bring a 25L fuel can to work, stick it in the boot, and fill it at every opportunity whistle

Keep an eye on the staff wink

Why not give FuelGenie a go to see how you get on?

It's only supermarket fuel and you pay the standard price but it's free, you can put some restrictions on the card and get a monthly statement.

Got a feeling you need to keep a mileage book too

yep, got a tracker for that via Tom Tom which is £13pcm. Saves having a pen and paper in the car!

Can the car show the average MPG over a long period, a month for example? See if it ties up with the Tom Tom and fuel reciepts

Asda don't accept it but the others do. It is an easy card to use as no chip and PIN number required.

Double it up with an allstar fuel card and it should cover the vast majority of outlets. Allstar is chip and pin so keep a note of the pin somewhere in the car.

I had use of a pool car, requested the use of that rather than a company car/allowance.

The car was checked weekly by someone from Operations, fuel guage noted and mileage book complete. It had to be signed out each time someone took it, and the keys were held by Ops. The refuelling either came from petty cash with a receipt coming back with the keys, or if they werent sure that £30/£40 exact would cover it, the person taking it put fuel in and expensed it back at the value of the fuel used rather than claimed a pence per mile.
