Selling a website
Discussion
I've got a website run basically as a hobby for her indoors.
It's a gift site turning over approx £10k / year. (As I said just a hobby). It's got a reasonably good name and comes on page 1 of Google for that particular gift range.
I'm thinking of giving it up and wonder what is the best way to dispose of it as it's not something i've ever thought of.
There is probably £8k's worth of stock to consider as well. I've just basically let it drift along for years but it could be bigger with a bit of work.
What do you reckon it's worth and how do I go about getting any money for it?
I'd have thought family / friends would be a good option.
Obviously the stock value is a given but over and above that there isn't a rule of thumb as to how much it'll be worth. Depends how unique it is and how much info you need to giveaway to make a deal.
Ultimately if someone can buy the stock for market value and recreate the website they'll do that rather than pay a premium for the site itself - unless of course there is a limited and repeat client base.
Have you looked at Daltons?
I'm not saying this applies to you but a lot of people selling a business think because its making £x profit a year the value is £x times 2 or 3 etc. The reality is if someone can recreate the business themselves for less than the asking price this is what they will do.

So who's most likely to buy it?
A competitor? Somebody in a close-but-not-quite market looking to move sideways? A very loyal customer? A supplier? They're the people I'd start with contacting, see if they might be interested.
