Understanding the Government Gateway - I need help

Can anyone explain to me in logical terms how the Government Gateway works.

The current task I am trying to complete is to Register a newly formed company for VAT.

The newly formed company doesn't have a Government Gateway ID, but as an individual I do have one.

Do I use my personal ID, or do I have to create an ID for the company. If I have to create an ID for the company, does this arrive by post?

Any help unravelling this mystery would be warmly received.

It is better to have a separate gateway for the limited company.

You sign in using your UTR as a username*, so you need to setup a Gateway account for your company. That involves waiting for them to send you an activation code through the post.

• Or perhaps it's another ID, it's numeric though.
