Very simple question (hopefully): when nylon parts are chromed (as found in the automotive industry for example), will the finish conduct electricity? If so does a nonconducting metallic finish exist?

As far as I'm aware, the process for a chrome-like coating on plastic is a bit different to chrome plating, not least because it can't be done with a standard electroplating method because (obv) nylon won't act as an electrode. I was once pointed to "electroless plating", but one plater told me it's not all that good, and doesn't last long. Stuff like headlamp reflectors, which are increasingly plastic, are often actually coated in sprayed aluminium ('vapour deposition') rather than actually chromed.

Doesn't answer the question, I know. I guess it depends on what the coating on the nylon actually is.
